Comment Re:No long series on TV; writers' career ladder go (Score 1) 79

I really miss TV shows where 1 episode was 1 story.. I find most TV these days (even the ones people love) to be too slow - basically very episode has to have so much filler and pointless dialogue because they are padding a single story out to almost 13 hours. Perhaps 45 minutes was sometimes a bit short, but at least it meant the story was told concisely. I mean I get that people like binge watching 13 hour stories and I'm the outlier, but I just cannot be arsed starting a story that's going to take that long to tell. Especially when there's no guarantee that it'll even be worth it.

I don't. Awesome game, played it for years. CoD doesn't hold a candle to DoD. Although I must admit I haven't been on for a year or two since I started playing Hell Let Loose (not that they are similar other than the superficial 1st person view and WW2 theme - I've just not played much else since I got into HLL and Rocket League).

God no :) (although I appreciate the suggestion). I looked once and Pluto TV was the opposite of what I like about linear tv. Its all single subject channels, like Baywatch channel or True Crime channel. You're never going to find a surprise pleasure. Plus I do like to actually watch what's on sometimes, I just don't want to have to care if I do miss half of it.

UK OTA tv, for all its flaws, usually has something on that fits the bill. You just don't know what it will be - like a light hearted detective show or afternoon drama series, an old movie or documentary about the life of a Highland airport, a weird quiz show or a cooking show from down on the farm.

Yip. I'm a background noise viewer. Its not even that its background, its that I'm probably going to be popping in and out, so don't want to go to the effort of picking something and then caring that I miss half of it. It also doesn't help that I find it hard these days to find anything that I consider 'high quality content' but maybe I am just getting old.

I guess I'm pushing old but I'm far from a boomer. And I definitely have a liking for linear TV, although I also use Kodi and streaming services. I don't think I'll ever lose that.

Sometimes I just like to stick the small TV on in the kitchen/dining room and not have to spend too much time picking what to watch. Also since its really background and I'm probably going to be going in and out, I don't want to watch something I care about.

Unless there's a big shift in steaming services I don't think they will ever scratch that itch for a few reasons. They are too US centric; its all too serious and 'big'; there just isn't enough low-brow local content; even if they created 'linear channels', like playlists or something, it would all be too focused (like a Mythbuster channel, or a true crime channel). I don't mind the odd American show coming on (when its background), but I like a bit of parochial-ness. I like it to feel like my culture, not like I'm living in someone else's country. And I don't just want to watch random episodes of the same shows.

Thinking about it, what gets lost is each regions/countries TV culture - which from my experience of USA v UK linear TV can be very different beasts. And what also gets lost is just finding things you'd never watch if you have unlimited choice, like an old documentary about fishing life in the Orkney Islands, or an afternoon drama about an old woman who misses her family, weird, local gameshows - random shit :)

Sorry for the ramble.
