Comment More context would've been nice (Score 1) 1

Voting this one up is difficult. It would've been nice to include this one, but unfortunately there is very little context in the post to give it any worth on its own. Even the acronym LSE is never written out as "London Stock Exchange" for any clarity. A bit more background/context is most surely required.

Comment Re:*Ka-Ching* Mate! (Score 2) 554

That is indeed a possible reason for the change. Tinkering with time conversion algorithms were in the past also attributed to the economy stimulus it would give the IT sector. That being said, I've read some British press that they want to move to the CET, since that is their main trading zone. A switch which I think will not have the economic effect they might hope for. Countries trading with the UK know there is a time difference and make sure that they handle any issues within the time window. Switching it in bits and bobs, however, is like the joke about the country that decided to change the side the cars drive on. As an experiment they started by switching the trucks to the other side of the road...

Comment Did Nokia choose M$ or did M$ choose Nokia? (Score 3, Insightful) 246

The press round the whole move of Nokia to M$ is very focussed on Nokia's choice. It could also be that Microsoft chose Nokia as an attempt to obtain share with a reputable hardware vendor to gain some share in a segment that they clearly see themselves losing this time round. Who is the bigger party here? Who needs this most? Sure, Nokia is also falling around on its feet and had an eight count a few times in the last decade, but from the way I see it, this is a deal driven squarely by Microsoft.

Comment Less antibiotics in our diet (Score 2) 760

It would be quite interesting to know how succeptable insects are for infections if farmed. One of the problems with livestock is the prophelactic use of antibiotics. This has its effect on the symbiosis further down the chain. If insects could provide a untainted protein source, then it shouldn't be too bad. We eat prawns already, don't we?

Comment AMD has taken ATI to a new level (Score 4, Informative) 138

In the past two years I've migrated from 10+ loyal Linux NVidia years to ATI. The ATI closed source drivers were reasonable whilst the NVidia drivers showed a slide in performance and stability (on my system in any case). Since September last year I've migrated my machines to the open source 3d drivers and what a beaut! My MythTV frontend with ATI onboard is impeccable. It'll require much to convince me to change away from ATI/AMD if they keep this kind of support available.

Comment Get a Canon with CHDK (Score 1) 106

A large portion of the canon cameras support CHDK (canon hack devkit). One of the nice features included in this is motion detection. This requires no external components to get it working, as it uses the CCD for triggering. There are numerous scripts that use CHDK to implement delays, time laps photo sequences or other funky actions. Most of the supported cameras are fast enough to capture lightning.
