Comment OneNote (Score 2) 10

This sounds a lot like OneNote. Remember when OneNote was great?

Not that cloning OneNote-when-it-was-great is a bad thing, I'd really love to see a good 2010-ish OneNote that supported all the platforms I use, and let me store data (encrypted, of course) on the target of my choice (the usual suspects, Backblaze B2, pCloud, sync.com, etc.).

I'm currently using Obsidian.md with my notes stored on pCloud, but old OneNote had such a great UI for managing notebooks, folders, and notes. I used Joplin (with encrypted notes stored on some cloud) before that. Everyone seems to be cloning OneNote's current terrible "simplified" UI... I'm happy to type notes in Markdown, but I need better notebook/folder/note management, I guess.

I bought a pCloud 500GB lifetime account a while back because I wanted something with a decent Linux client. I use Backblaze's B2 for Linux backups (via restic) and their normal product for mac/Windows backups. My cloud use case is basically "I want a folder that syncs easily between n computers". I'd try OwnCloud or similar but I don't want to muck around with dynamic DNS services and opening up something in my network to The Internet.

I'd prefer to use Sync.com, but they don't have a Linux client, and they don't have an API to let someone else make one.

Sort of hoping someone makes a Dropbox-like client for B2 now that they've dropped download fees.

I migrated off Dropbox when they added Condoleeza Rice to their board.

Probably a couple other options. {something} could be speed, compatibility, bloat, Electron, I dunno.

I was using Insync (https://www.insynchq.com/) for Google Drive and OneDrive syncing on Linux and macOS for a while, before I bought a pCloud account.

It works well, but is slightly at the mercy of Google/MS mucking about with their OAuth interfaces. Google especially seemed to "accidentally" break Insync's authentication every 2-3 months.

Their support folks were pretty great though, something I've definitely never said about Google or Microsoft. :-D

I installed Windows 11 pretty much as soon as it was available for my system. After a few months, I switched full-time to Linux (Kubuntu this time; I used Mint before but wanted to try a KDE based system).

Windows 11 was annoying enough that I abandoned the platform. And the software I'd bought there (Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer are excellent!). I spend my free time playing video games and figuring out how to make them... and it's now less annoying for me to do this on Linux. All the things I need are there, and if they're not, I can run them via Wine or find something else.

For the first time in decades, I ordered new hardware specifically to run a non-Windows OS. I hope Windows 11 encourages other people to look at their options.

I've got high hopes for Framework's 16; they've got a nice 13 using Ryzen, but I'm holding out for something with a discrete Radeon GPU. https://frame.work/

Laptops using Ryzen/Radeon are stupidly rare, especially if you're trying to avoid terrible manufacturers. Origin (who are you?!) and Alienware have models that seem decent, but not quite what I want (and Alienware is pricey and carries Dell's stink).

I'm just a lowly desktop user, but I was going to try Fedora on my next system. On the assumption that Fedora is next on IBM's enshittification hit-list, I'll give OpenSUSE a go instead.

I came to my current Linux system because I got sick of the enshittification of Windows (and Linux is just so much more comfortable for hobbyist development), it's a shame to see it happening to major distros.
