Very much agreed. I learned PHP back in the 90's since it was a fast and easy way to get a database backed website up and running. I've moved to python since then, but I'd expect after 20+ years of improvement PHP is still really good at it's core abilities.

That and once you learn the fundamentals of programming with PHP, you can take those skills to your next language.

I'd suggest if you aren't learning a new language every 5 yrs then you may be limiting your potential.

But yeah. I'm feeling you on this one. I don't like to go into my mother's house at all, because it's so bad. Unfortunately there is some valuable stuff mixed in there, so it all needs to be sorted through carefully. :(

Gen X'er here. I see this as a win for me. Good thing too, because I don't expect any social security worth anything to be around by the time I retire. I'll need a cheap place to live.

But yeah, we're living in a housing bubble right now, along with all the other bubbles that that will pop on us and the following generations.

This sort of cavalier attitude towards science ethics sort of reminds me of how scientists were concerned that the first atomic bomb might set the atmosphere on fire if they set it off. Of course we now know that didn't happen, but someone, somewhere was like: "Fuck it, light that shit up". Same thing with all this genetic tinkering, but we don't know what could happen if some scientist looking for some limelight goes off the ranch and wrecks up something horribly. What do you do in that case. "Ooops I didn't know"? How about, just stop messing around with stuff we don't need to mess with?

If you think about our society, imagine if all of a sudden we didn't have computers, electricity, or even 20th century machining skills? How good would any of us be at doing complex math on paper? Or how about making your furniture, or lighting your home a night? How would you get a round or make food. Good luck getting a horse, let alone taking care of one, and knowing how to use animals for labor. All those country rubes, and amish folks wouild all of a sudden be the advanced society and the rest of us would be cheap manual labor willing to do anything for food.

I do believe that any digital modes used in the Amateur bands should be open source. Any modes or protocols that require paying for a license would seem to go against the spirit of the FCC's rules. I use C4FM, psk modes, Olivia, etc, myself, and it pisses some folks off because they can't easily listen into my conversations using their scanners. I get it, and I think it is a grey area. Perhaps the FCC should regulate digital modes? That would come at the cost of innovation though.

Oh I think there is a real group of hipster tech folks that not only take pride in open source and innovation, but there is serious coolness to it too.

If I could, I'd go full Wyoming and dump my computers, and smartphone and other such wastes of time and sanity and just run a small farm. Unfortunately for me it's contrary to how I make a living and the pay is too good to make a change.
