Submission + - Is PlayStation 3 "the great unwanted console&#

TobyToadstool writes: CNET says that the PlayStation 3 is "the most unwanted console in recent memory" and asks "why is the PS3 so undesirable?" Focusing on the UK launch this month, the article ponders why it's so easy to get hold of a PS3 in the UK: "Right now, it's about as hard to get a PS3 for launch as it is an orange in California". CNET also questions Sony's wisdom in "emphasizing the 'power' of the PlayStation console over its games... inviting developers to neglect gameplay and invest heavily in these amazing graphics."

Submission + - id Talks Licensing, Consoles & More

Leowiz writes: PlanetQuake4.net has an interview with id Software's Marty Stratton and Steve Nix. In the interview they discuss engine licensing, console development, piracy, digital distribution, and QuakeCon. Steve recently joined id Software after working as Ritual Entertainment's CEO. Marty has been with id Software for the last seven years as their Director of Business Development, but as recently taken on the role of Executive Producer.

Steve and Marty both recognized the growing importance of digital distribution, but have no plans of putting the publisher out of the equation any time soon. "The retail channel isn't going away," Marty said, and while a company such as id has the financial means to finance their own projects, they don't have the human resources to manage a retail relationship like a big publisher does. The publisher still adds a ton of value, especially in the marketing of games.

Submission + - Researchers claim GM corn is dangerous for humans

miahfost writes: "Gene-modified corn MON 863 which has recently been approved for the European market should immediately be forbidden claims the French research group CRII-GEN, who recently completed the only independent analysis of Monsanto's test data for the corn. MON 863, designed to produce a pesticide through gene manipulation, when fed to female rats increased the levels of sugar and fat in their bloodstream. The GM corn also increased the size and weight of the liver as well as impaired kidney function. In male rats the liver shrunk. Note that toxic substances often affect the different sexes differently though the study was too short to identify specific illness that the GM corn was causing, however detoxification organs were clearly being affected. Here is the report in French CRII-GEN report. Here is an article in Swedish: SvD article."

TrackinYeti writes: "HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface), is the first industry supported digital-only interface, that requires a single cable to connect an output source to an HD-ready device, such as a television or monitor and deliver HD video, plus multi-channel digital audio, like Dolby Digital and DTS. Recently, Asus Computer released versions of their GeForce 7600 and Radeon X1600 cards with HDMI outputs on them, driven by an on-board Sil1930 controller. These are some of the first graphics cards to hit the market that can output HDMI natively with an integrated HDCP cipher engine and support HD-audio as well."

Submission + - Top Reasons Why Google Enterprise Apps Will Fail

seanj writes: "OSWeekly gives a number of reasons why Google will probably fail with its enterprise applications. "To Google fans, I can see where this may be seen as spectacular news. But to the skeptics, such as myself, I believe it's going to prove difficult at best. Why the harsh outlook? Because this has been part of the Microsoft domain for so long that I don't believe that IT managers are ready to make the leap of faith that Google needs to kick start things with. Then again, Google could be closer than I initially thought..."
