It still works. Cars can be charged both at night during periods of low demand and during peak solar times when most cars are sitting idle in a lot somewhere. The evening peak demand starts after people get home and fire up the stoves, computers, AC, etc. If you charged that after noon, it is likely that there is still plenty of power in the battery after the commute home. Same thing in the morning. Water heaters coming on after a morning shower tend to push the demand up even after people have left their homes, but that is simple to fix.
The issue right now is that battery cycles are too expensive to use EV batteries this way. Hopefully that will change in the next few years.
