Comment Harden the f*** up! (Score 2, Insightful) 366

OK disclaimer first. I haven't seen it yet. I haven't seen a screen shot yet. I haven't read anything yet. I'm still running 9.04.

But I can absolutely see reasons to support this.

I recently enabled the Group and Tab Windows in Compiz.
I was staggered by the functionality and possibilities, but frustrated by the usability. Right click on title bar? Nothing. Anything in the Windowing menu (Top left under icon)? Err, nope. AFAICT, the only way to make any use of it is knowing the key stroke combos. It's like learning all over again! And this is the only way to control the GUI itself! No integration into the Windowing UI?

So, from my perspective, you need a way to control the newer MDI technologies, and if they stick it in the window bar where _/[]/X was, stick that same _/[]/X wherever you want.

Eye candy will definitely win some converts. If it's an opportunity for Ubuntu to lead and someone else to react, then what have you got to lose?

Ubuntu's "Lucid Lynx" Enters Beta 366

ActionDesignStudios writes "The upcoming release of Ubuntu, titled 'Lucid Lynx,' has just entered the beta cycle. Alongside the usual desktop and server versions, a special version has been released that is designed to run on Amazon's EC2 cloud service. This release of Ubuntu does away with the brown 'Human' Gnome theme we've all become accustomed to, replaced by a new version Canonical says is inspired by light. The new release also includes much better integration with social networking services such as Twitter, identi.ca and Facebook, among others."

jimjimovich writes: One new feature in Ubuntu 10.04 that caught my attention is the Desktop in the Cloud project. Ubuntu already has great EC2 support, and it's getting even better. Now you can launch Ubuntu Desktop instances on EC2 and connect to them with an NX client.

Submission + - Panasonic's Storm of Rising Black Levels

An anonymous reader writes: There's been a rising storm that started from a post at AVSForums some 6 months ago about rising black levels in Panasonic plasma televisions. The deep blacks that many bought the Panasonics for appeared to be degrading over time. Panasonic has admitted that is the case, but claimed it is working as designed and won't be fixed. Cnet has now completed tests confirming measurements made originally by AVSForums members. There's now also the obligatory Downfall parody, and talk of a class action lawsuit. What's next ?

Submission + - Novell on the block? $2B unsolicited offer. (ostatic.com)

ruphus13 writes: The mighty public FOSS companies are falling... Sun's gone, after a rough courtship and dance with IBM, Oracle and the EU. Red Hat may be the last man standing, with Novell receiving an unsolicited bid of $2B for Novell. According to the post, "After the close of trading in U.S. stock markets on Tuesday, Elliott Associates, L.P., a hedge fund with a significant position in shares of Novell, placed an unsolicited offer to buy the company for $2 billion. Its offer of $5.75 per share in cash is well above Novell's closing price today of $4.75 per share, and caused Novell's shares to rise above $6 in after hours trading. The offer places a high valuation on Novell, and the troubled company will have to consider it very carefully."

Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 2 vs. Early Fedora 13 Benchmarks 157

Given that early benchmarks of the Lucid Lynx were less than encouraging, Phoronix decided to take the latest alpha out for a spin and has set it side-by-side with an early look at Fedora 13. "Overall, there are both positive and negative performance changes for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Alpha 2 in relation to Ubuntu 9.10. Most of the negative regressions are attributed to the EXT4 file-system losing some of its performance charm. With using a pre-alpha snapshot of Fedora 13 and the benchmark results just being provided for reference purposes, we will hold off on looking into greater detail at this next Red Hat Linux update until it matures."

Man Sues Neighbor For Not Turning Off His Wi-Fi 428

Scyth3 writes "A man is suing his neighbor for not turning off his cell phone or wireless router. He claims it affects his 'electromagnetic allergies,' and has resorted to being homeless. So, why doesn't he check into a hotel? Because hotels typically have wireless internet for free. I wonder if a tinfoil hat would help his cause?"

Average Budget For Major, Multi-Platform Games Is $18-28 Million 157

An anonymous reader passes along this excerpt from Develop: "The average development budget for a multiplatform next-gen game is $18-$28 million, according to new data. A study by entertainment analyst group M2 Research also puts development costs for single-platform projects at an average of $10 million. The figures themselves may not be too surprising, with high-profile games often breaking the $40 million barrier. Polyphony's Gran Turismo 5 budget is said to be hovering around the $60 million mark, while Modern Warfare 2's budget was said to be as high as $50 million."

Sad, isnt it? You should just be thankful you only see the really best of the ideas our glorious leaders of business and politics come up with.

It's as if pure marketing has taken over the country. Everyone is on a desperate mission to do something that is "first", "best" or some other superlative to get their 15 minutes of fame. Whether it actually makes any sense, is logically feasible, or benefits Australians is irrelevant.

My friend, you should be happy your parents are so young and have all their faculties.

I can tell my dad something now, tell him to write it down, and in 10 minutes, he's forgotten where he put the note that he wrote down.

There's a slight difference between being selfish and protecting yourself from going insane(r).

I kid you not, I went through a stage explaining to my Mum why her spreadsheets were not on her computer anymore because she had actually changed computers. Just she didn't remember that one small detail; same keyboard and screen; she had just replaced the box (of course with a different hdd in it).

Comment Changed over time....and depends on who it is... (Score 1) 606

I think I have been through most of the poll options above over time.

I started with "Yes, gladly", but have found that my best case nowadays is "Yes, but at great cost to my eternal soul". It does depend to some extent which member of family/friends I'm dealing with. My best friends and favorite family members DON'T ask for or get any tech help. Try that simple check for yourself. Doesn't mean I don't do anything for them, just not that dirty techy stuff ;-)

In most cases nowadays, it is actually "No" in one form or another. Let's not be dishonest with each other, "I feign ignorance" is a reflection that you can't say that word "No". In other words, you prefer to lie rather than offend friends or a family member.

I must say I was staggered by the huge vote for "Yes, but at great cost to me". Clearly, you want to say No, but can't or won't do it. I hope that the friends/family understand that it's a big favour you're doing for them; it's not something that is necessarily easy, nor that you want to do!

Anyways, as I get older...err, I mean more mature, I move further down the "No" tree. Goddam kids better stay off my lawn too!

Comment Save me waxing my car... (Score 1) 48

With some of the products on the market now that make use of various Si compounds, and some that claim nano-tech, I would love to see this type of self-arranging -dare I say smart?- nano-tech to form the barrier between my car's paint and the environment. The problem with all sealants and waxes is that they degrade, meaning you (or someone you pay) has to do it at regular intervals. Typically between 1 month and 6 months. I love my car, but hate the polish/seal/wax scenarios :-/

Bonus points if it can be made to enhance depth, and look shiny!
