Comment Re:The sky is not falling on Reddit (Score 1) 179

I was annoyed that some of the subs that I used to follow got diverted into protests. It was basically senseless SPAM, and now I don't follow them. Mostly discussion of specific games, which are also actively discussed on Discord.

There is currently a small fraction of reddit posters who think they are being extraordinarily clever by sprinkling fuck and fucking in their subject lines. I assume they believe this will prevent advertising being added to their thread? I'm not sure if that is the effect or expectation, but it does make browsing Reddit a lot less appealing, for me.

You can still find cheap poorly made stuff, sure, but when I review a vendor I can usually get a good idea of how long they have been supplying a specific range of product and how many people have made complaints about them. There are some vendors that I trust and have never had bad product from, including SSDs, external drive parts and cases, Arduino bits etc.

The irony is that some of the AliExpress vendors are making and selling products far better than what most retailers in my country will get in stock. The prices on Ali are massively lower than in the shop down the road, and are better quality. This also applies to clothing and shoes, kitchen ware, all manner of goods. Local retailers are getting the cheapest possible supplies and then pricing them like they are the best you can find. Online is the first place I look now, even with the slow deliveries.

Comment Re: Obligatory Sourceforge plug: (Score 1) 45

Is this a troll? It was never in every projects installer. There was a huge mis-step when management decided to repack the installers for a few abandoned projects, and they offered an option for project owners to include an advertising feature in their installer in a poor attempt to enable monetizing their projects. This option was never taken up by managers of any of the software which I used back then, and I still use some of those tools today. My own project hosted on Sourceforge has never been compromised. It still gets downloaded today, and I occasionally get feedback for modifications from people w occasionally use it. I started with the original version control system, then converted the project to Git when they introduced it. The service has all the features I require for my tiny open source project and has never let me down. I assume that it scales for larger projects and teams, as well as any Git hosting service does.

I did not know that this is what that person did/does, and I don't care to investigate or stalk them. I just don't see any point in the continuous copy-paste bitching that fills my screen whenever that person posts something. We get it, you don't like him. Could you cut the bitch sessions down a bit. This isn't the place for it.

I'm complaining more about those that start out sharing a hobby or special interest, and then start to think their subscribers could support them in a full time job. Sometimes the passion for their original subject matter seems to trickle away.

A more interesting metric for lost youtube subscribers would be, how many unsubbed after the content started to contain more mentions of the providers patreon account (and the special extras that patreon supporters get) than actual content in each video.
