I don't understand how this is a big deal.

I have installed Officesuite Pro on both a tablet and smartphone.

I can create and edit documents quite easily and no subscription is needed. I paid £9.99 and more than happy with it.

It's also "Office" compatible (e.g. excel and word)

Not to mention the other officesuites out there too (e.g. King office is even free)

It all works really well with a bluetooth keyboard linked to a tablet too.

I imagine corporate types are asking for Microsoft Office for IOS - beyond that no big deal.

I look at a computer screen all day and sometimes cannot be arsed doing it again at home.

I've ordered the Nook Simple Touch and it has 3 killer features for me:
    (1) Eink display is great even though it's only 800x600(?) - also means decent battery charge
    (2) Has an sd-card slot too - I'll be able to have all my ebooks on it
    (3) Can be rooted to enable Google Play (also install a proper PDF viewer too)

They've also dropped the price to £29 in the UK this week and they are selling fast (all shops in my high street have sold out this week).

Alas, it appears only recent versions of their tablets will have the restrictions lifted.

It's a shame really - If they official released a unrestricted Eink-based ebook reader it may improve their sales - they have a successful product in there somewhere.

(Currently an old version of android is installed - eclair and obviously the screen is not designed for games)

I bought an S3 September last year - when it had ICS it felt quite nippy. However since "upgrading" to Jellybean I've noticed lags between switching apps and yes the UI is clunky and waayyy over-complicated.

It's still a damn good phone all I need is a stable version of cyanogen then I'll flash it.

I can understand why people ad-block - especially web pages.

However, developers get a slice of the ad-revenue when the ads are presented via their apps.

I have an android phone & tablet and free apps with advertising and I've also paid for apps too - usually to disable ads or shock horror actually find an app useful and pay the developer a fair price.

If you like an app enough then buy it (in most cases just a few pounds) or if you are not willing to pay for an app you'll have to put up with ads instead.

If you want to ad-block something fine but remember you may be hurting the app developers too.

At the end of the day it's his company and if he wants to take Ubuntu in his/their own direction that's up to them.

I used Ubuntu for many years and was really happy with it. I moved on since then and use another distro.

Ubuntu has done a lot of great work for the Linux community and also got a few things wrong (in my humble opinion).

There is no reason to hate them for it. People make the opinions known and it's up to Conanical to take these opinions on board or not.

There is so much choice out there for Linux and if you don't agree with Ubuntu's direction use something else. Ubunutu is open-source so you can roll your own version or use a derivative.

  But really all the hate for Ubuntu and Shuttleworth is childish.

I have a "funny" feeling Miguel probably turned his back on the community because of the zealotry and hate spewed from the community at large. Some of the comments AND moderation are embarrassing!

The GNOME Desktop at version 2 was great, I was a fan for many years and I'm grateful it exists. I didn't like KDE during that time (found it too clunky - just my humble opinion - I like it now!) .
Personally I think the "Desktop" as it stands today is bloated and way too complicated now and I say this in particular for KDE and GNOME. I'm currently using XFCE.

The Mono project was a response to Microsoft's "invention" of the .net platform where "all Windows software will be based on .Net". Potentially there would have been no way to write cross-platform software for Windows. Thankfully not much of a threat now. I used Mono years ago and enjoyed coding for the platform.

Miguel has started Xamian and the company offers cross-platform development tools which is great but I can't afford the $300 yearly subscription and Linux support for the "platform" is noticeably absent. A damn shame really. I would liked to have evaluated it.

Also, one of the main "features" of Linux is the existence of many distributions of Linux. I started with Slackware then Redhat, Mandriva, Debian, gentoo, Ubuntu and now Porteus. They've all served me well over the years because each one filled a particular need at the time.

I'm no zealot and I use what works for me. Generally I use Windows for gaming & Linux for everything else. I'm considering buying a Mac because I want to develop stuff for iPhone (I actually own an SIII) and don't like the idea of Microsoft locking down the bootloader on a "PC". I know Apple do this too but at least their OS foundation is based on unix.

Miguel is entitled to his beliefs and opinions. He may have made mistakes but nobody is perfect.

Judging by the teams of US "Ambassadors" being sent into Europe and I assume into Asia too all that may change.

A UK-based ISP/Cloud services company offers Linux/Windows based Cloud Servers and they think it's a good idea to name the product range after a well-known programming language?

It's a nice way to "gain the trust" of potential customers - "Yeah we're the guys that screwed over the Python community (we totally stressed them out and cost them major $ too) - buy our stuff you can trust us!"

"btw, we off Linux installed on our servers too. Ironic don't you think?"

No doubt this will gain a lot of negative publicity especially on sites like slashdot.org - you know the very people that know a lot about ISP/cloudy services!!!!!

True, the discrepancy is old news but as capacity increases the difference is becoming more noticeable.

It would be so much better if "they" were persuaded to return to using the correct measurement.

Microsoft, you have just experienced the concept known as "khama".

If the answer is "no" to both these questions then this whole concept is going to fail.

I have an android phone - I can install chroot ubuntu but no GPU support means it's limited.

If the source code is open source it means we can install it on existing devices or ideally run in parallel with ICS or Jellybean.

If they only going to release the Ubuntu Phone OS with hardware (e.g. "..9 to 12 months time..") then this will go the same way as WebOS.

They are going to build some kind of traction with the community first.
