Comment Completely wrong (Score 1) 184

Evolution doesn't select for or against anything that doesn't confer a survival/reproduction advantage or disadvantage. Clearly, drinking alcohol does not result in any significant, species-wide effect in that area, so evolution is not a factor here at all.

Comment Re: "dumb TV" with usb (Score 1) 84

Modern smart TVs are actually subsidized to put the 'smart' part in, hoping you'll subscribe to something.

My latest 55" TCL Roku TV was only $399 (a year ago), and when the internal Roku stops working, I can easily attach another separate Roku (or whatever) to it.

It's really a win-win situation at this point.

Comment Initial orbit is even lower (Score 2) 165

If you look at McDowell's actual data, you'll see that later launches have lowered the initial orbit to a bit under 300km. Any Starlink satellites that fail immediately will drop out of orbit in months. The working ones use their ion thrusters to raise up to the operational orbit of 550km.

As others have noted, there have been substantial improvements to the design since the initial batch, so I'd expect the failure rate to decrease in later launches.

Comment Mandatory phone app (Score 1) 96

My large company went out and bought 20k company cell phones that employees are now required to carry on their person at all times when in a company building, just like your badge. The phones have both a bluetooth Covid-tracking app, and a 'work pass' app that makes you answer the standard exposure questions every day. You have to show the generated work pass to the security guard when you get your temperature checked as you enter the building. We assume that company legal decided they couldn't mandate the app install on personal cell phones, hence the new ones.

We're on a 50% rotating schedule in the office, and cubicles were moved such that nobody has another person in an adjacent cubicle on their shift.

So far, we've had three reported cases of Covid-19 in my building, of which I had the honor of being first, back in August. Thankfully still around to post this.

As annoying as the phone app and other measures are, I do think the company has done a pretty good job. We are considered an 'essential' business, so completely closing isn't an option, and a good chunk of our R&D simply can't be done at home.

Comment Who cares? (Score 1) 59

I recently bought an Oculus Quest and have been pretty happy with it as an upgrade to my old Gear VR set.

I really don't understand all the butthurt about Facebook requiring an FB login for _their_ product. Did anyone seriously expect anything different? It is just not difficult to create a Facebook account that you don't actually use except for Oculus. Facebook 'badness' is directly proportional to the stupidity of the things you post on Facebook.

Personally, I've had a FB account for well over a decade that I depend upon to keep me connected with friends and family, so I'm using FB anyway. My main concerns are availability of software and willingness of the company to pour more R&D into the platform. As long as that keeps up, I'm happy.

Comment 15 year old PERL running fine (Score 1) 219

My company has a custom automation framework written in PERL that is still running fine after 15 years. The underlying Linux system has been upgraded a bunch of times, and the PERL version just once.

The real problem is that nobody wants to work with PERL anymore, so we have been replacing it with a Python based system.
