Journal Journal: TIFF09/02 Perrier's Bounty

Irish gangster film that has a young tough on a deadline to repay a local gangster while trying to deal with his dying father. Cillian Murphy, Jim Broadbent and Brendan Gleason form a superb cast for this adventure through twilight, sodden urban Ireland. By turns comical and morose.

Journal Journal: TIFF09/02 V.O.S.

Spanish film that based on a play that tracks two couples as they work through their relationships and regularly break the fourth wall and walk off set breaking the illusion of film-making. There were elements of A Cock and Bull story to this movie although the conceit was handled somewhat better in this Spanish film. At play is also the interplay between Spanish, Catalonian and Basque language and politics. There were many, many beautiful transitions between scenes that helped atone for a

Journal Journal: TIFF09/01 Jennifer's Body

Jennifer's Body. Diablo Cody, Megan Fox. Basically Ginger Snaps but the girls aren't sisters so there is a little girl-on-girl action happening. Whenever anyone plays with genre films, which is all of the time these days, it is always interesting to see the ways in which conventions are overturned. Innocent kids are not more likely to survive than not-so-innocent kids. The females are definitely the protagonists. The first act of evil is more a comment on modern kids not wanting to work

Journal Journal: TIFF09/01 Nymph

Nymph, a film from Thai director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang. Modern middle-class ennui meets woodland spirits. As their marriage fractures May and Nop go off into the woods. A good movie, not a great one. Took too long to get going but entertaining once it did. I found the soundscapes similar to the ones designed for the movie Vinyan which was also shot in Indochina.

So I skipped making any notes about TIFF08. I had friends in town and I was very busy. But now I am free to concentrate on the film fest. Here is my starting list:

Apple's IPhone 3G Firmware Update Bombs 423

JagsLive writes "After lots of complaints about iPhone 3G connection issues, Apple released a firmware update Monday with hopes it would fix the issues. But early reports suggest it didn't work as planned. Complaints have included dropped calls, abrupt network switches, poor reception, and service interruptions. Apple declined to offer details about its iPhone 2.0.1 update, other than saying it included 'bug fixes.' However, comments in Apple's support forum say plenty about the latest attempt to rectify poor user experiences. In fact, the update seems to be causing new issues, apparently interfering with the GPS function, among others."

Yale Students' Lawsuit Unmasks Anonymous Trolls 668

palegray.net writes "Two female Yale law school students have used the courts to ascertain the identities of otherwise anonymous posters to an Internet forum, with the intent of prosecuting them for hateful remarks left on the boards. At a minimum, the posters' future legal careers are certainly jeopardized by these events. While I'm not certainly not supporting or encouraging hateful speech online, these controversial actions hold potentially far-reaching consequences for Internet privacy policy and free speech." According to the linked Wired Law article, "The women themselves have gone silent, and their lawyers — two of whom are now themselves being sued — are not talking to the press."

Submission + - Alan Cox files patent for DRM

booooh writes: "Alan Cox has filed a patent for DRM (Digital Rights Management).
http://www.freshpatents.com/Rights-management-syst em-dt20050623ptan20050138406.php
A rights management system monitors and controls use of a computer program to prevent use that is not in compliance with acceptable terms.
The nice things about this are:
  1. According to Red Hat's patent pledge they will not license this technology if the patent is granted, but rather will probably sue to avoid others using it.
  2. It can probably be applied to the DRM that is in Vista...

Submission + - Why cell phone outage reports are secret

thenendo writes: "An MSNBC article reports on the recent rejection of FOIA requests for government-collected cell phone outage statistics. It would seem that the FCC is using the threat of terrorism as a thinly veiled excuse to protect Telecoms from fair market competition for reliability. From the article:
"A federal Freedom of Information Act request for the data, filed in August by MSNBC.com, has been rejected by the agency [the FCC]. The stated reasons: Release of the information could help terrorists plan attacks against the United States, and it would harm the companies involved.
...
"'There is nothing mysterious behind it, it is corporate competition protection,' said Cressey, now a partner in Good Harbor Consulting. 'The only reason for the government to not let these records get out is then one telco provider could run a full-page ad saying "the government says we're more reliable."'
...
"Al Tompkins, a Freedom of Information Act expert at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think-tank, said release of the cell phone outage reports would be 'a tremendous consumer tool,' and compared them to the Federal Aviation Administration's publication of airline on-time records.""

Submission + - Protect Your Site Against Fake Accounts

An anonymous reader writes: Disposable email addressing is becoming a big threat for web site owners. From Wikipedia:

Disposable e-mail addressing (DEA) refers to an alternative way of sharing and managing e-mail addressing. DEA aims to set up a new, unique e-mail address for every contact or recipient. This makes a point-to-point connection between the sender and the recipient. Subsequently, if anyone compromises the address or utilises it in connection with any e-mail abuse, the address-owner can easily cancel (or "dispose" of it) without affecting any other contact. Following the cancellation or replacement of a disposable e-mail address, the (ex-)owner need notify no more than one person/contact of the change.

Some known DEA services are 10minutemail, Jetable, Pookmail and Mailinator.

Undisposable.org is a collaborative protection system against DEA and other threats like public accounts (spread from bugmenot.com likes). Undisposable uses SOAP, JSON, PHP, REST and XML-RPC methods to communicate with your scripts written in any language. Does not require registration and implementing is like a breeze with the provided API kits. If you don't want to end up with a database filled with fake accounts, you may want to give it a try.
Television

Submission + - Comcast decrees "You will watch our TV or pay!

PortHaven writes: "Just received a notice from Comcast regarding future rate hikes. Essentially, Comcast is trying to force all it's broadband subscribers to use their TV service.

The rates were as follows:

$39.95 internet+TV
$49.95 internet only ($39.95+$10 additional fee)

The new rates for 2007 are as follows:

$42.95 internet+TV
$59.95 internet only

There is nearly a 40% cost difference if you decide not to subscribe to Comcast's TV. Yes, it is common to offer discounts for bundled services but Comcast has gone way beyond a mere bundle discount. The new pricing scheme is akin to McDonald's announcing that you can no longer buy a hamburger unless you also buy a coke and fries. Everyone understands the concept of the value meal. Buy a #1 and save 70 cents on your big mac, fries and coke. But what Comcast is doing is charging $7 for a #1 value meal. And if you just want to buy a big mac charging you the same $7.

Essentially, this pricing is designed to prevent customer from moving to alternatives. Now any difference in savings you'd gain by using satellite TV + cable internet is lost because there is now a $20 surchage. Presently, my household does not own a TV or subscribe to TV service instead we utilize Netflix and iTunes. The only real alternative to cable broadband is DSL. However, the telephone companies require you to have a landline (approx. $20). I, like many others in the younger generations have found no need for a landline (our cell phones do quite nicely) nor for TV service.

It appears I have no choice but to choose one or the other if I want broadband internet access. It's Monopoly! Do you choose to land on Boardwalk or Park Place?"
PC Games (Games)

Submission + - Christian Video Game Depicts New Crusade

delirium of disorder writes: "In the new computer game, Left Behind: Eternal Forces, players are ordered to convert or kill to advance to the next level, remodel America as a Christian-controlled state, and establish its world vision of Christ's dominion. The game pits the paramilitary Christian Tribulation Force against the Global Community Peacekeepers of the Antichrist, said to be modelled on the United Nations. The fantasy is based on what might happen if the events of the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, happened today. The game has been criticized by secular groups and a Muslim association has called for it to be banned."
