Submission + - Chimps use spears for hunting

devnulljapan writes: In the journal Current Biology, Jill D. Pruetz and Paco Bertolani report that chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in Senegal make and using wooden spears to hunt other primates. Full text is here
Summary
Although tool use is known to occur in a wide range of species, the modification and use of tools during hunting is still considered a uniquely human trait among primates. Here, we report the first account of habitual tool use during vertebrate hunting by nonhumans. At the Fongoli site in Senegal, we observed ten different chimpanzees use tools to hunt prosimian prey in 22 bouts. This includes immature chimpanzees and females, members of age-sex classes not normally characterized by extensive hunting behavior. Chimpanzees made 26 different tools, and we were able to recover and analyze 12 of these. Tool construction entailed up to five steps, including trimming the tool tip to a point. Tools were used in the manner of a spear, rather than a probe or rousing tool. This new information on chimpanzee tool use has important implications for the evolution of tool use and construction for hunting in the earliest hominids, especially given our observations that females and immature chimpanzees exhibited this behavior more frequently than adult males.

Submission + - Heroic Slashdotter Mistakes Pron for Rape

ObiWanStevobi writes: Ok, since this is considered an invasion case, I picked YRO. I also figured a sword qualifies as a handheld device.

A man who lives in his mother's basement, and has a sword collection, is being charged after breaking into his neighbor's house. He broke in after hearing what sounded like a woman being raped. He burst through the door weilding his sword with a +3 Dexterity adrenaline rush. The frightened wanker then proceeded to show him(James Van Iveren AKA Krunk the Slashdotter) that he was alone and just watching a porno. Van Iveren is now being charged on several counts such as trespassing and damage to property for breaking the door. LINK

Submission + - IBM sued for firing Internet addict

globring writes: A man who was fired by IBM for visiting an adult chat room at work is suing the company for $5 million, claiming he is an Internet addict who deserves treatment and sympathy rather than dismissal. If it goes to trial, the case could affect how employers regulate Internet use that is not work-related, or how Internet overuse is categorized medically.

Bummer."

Submission + - Cisco VP Explains Lawsuit Against Apple

Dekortage writes: "The day after Apple announced its iPhone, Cisco sued over the name. Mark Chandler, Cisco's SVP and General Counsel, has posted an explanation of the suit on his blog: "For the last few weeks, we have been in serious discussions with Apple over how the two companies could work together and share the iPhone trademark. ...I was surprised and disappointed when Apple decided to go ahead and announce their new product with our trademarked name without reaching an agreement. It was essentially the equivalent of 'we're too busy.'" What did Cisco want? "[We] wanted an open approach. We hoped our products could interoperate in the future.""

Submission + - Japan's Newest Diplomats: Manga and Anime

jonerik writes: "The Asahi Shimbun is reporting that Japan's foreign minister, Tara Aso, has ordered Japan's diplomats and bureaucrats to brush up on the nation's cultural exports; in particular manga and anime. "We live in such times where the popular voice coming from the general public could sway a country's foreign policy," says Aso. 'I'd like to make sure that our robust pop culture is on our side.' The biggest problem is that very few members of the Japanese diplomatic corps actually know much about Japan's cultural exports. '[An] obstacle is that few officials high up in the diplomatic ranks are well-versed in Japanese pop culture. Most admit they never read manga, and they don't watch much television, either. One senior government official admitted: "Our (pop culture) knowledge base is far weaker compared to the private sector." The official added he is now diligently working through the manga best-seller list as the first step to catch up.' The risk that Japan runs in this approach is that publicizing the good aspects of the country's culture is also likely to make more people aware of the less wholesome ones (panty vending machines, lolicon, and so on) According to Yasuki Hamano, a professor at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School (and who also chairs the ministry's special committee on pop culture), 'Pop culture is not all snow-white — there is a down-and-dirty side, too. But the government should not be censoring its content.' The directive from Aso is unsurprising in at least one sense: the 66-year-old Aso has long been known to be a fan of the Rozen Maiden manga and anime series."

Submission + - "Avatar" special effects, NYT

An anonymous reader writes: James Cameron, who directed "Titanic", has devised revolutionary methods to shoot "Avatar" and expects to create still more methods to bring to life the vision of a completely photo-realistic alien world. For its aliens, "Avatar" will present characters designed on the computer, but played by human actors. Their bodies will be filmed using the latest evolution of motion-capture technology — markers placed on the actor and tracked by a camera — while the facial expressions will be tracked by tiny cameras on headsets that will record their performances to insert them into a virtual world. The most important innovation thus far has been a camera, designed by Mr. Cameron and his computer experts, that allows the director to observe the performances of the actors-as-aliens, in the film's virtual environment, as it happens. "It's like a big, powerful game engine," he explained. "If I want to fly through space, or change my perspective, I can. I can turn the whole scene into a living miniature and go through it on a 50 to 1 scale. It's pretty exciting." The live-action shoot with actors will begin in April, with major effects being done by Weta, the filmmaker Peter Jackson's New Zealand-based effects company, which created the effects for his "Lord of the Rings." The film is scheduled for release in summer 2009

thecybernator writes: "BAGHDAD, Dec 30 (Reuters) — Saddam Hussein was hanged for crimes against humanity at dawn on Saturday, a dramatic, violent end for a leader who ruled Iraq by fear for three decades before he was toppled by a U.S. invasion four years ago. "It was very quick. He died right away," one of the official Iraqi witnesses told Reuters, saying the ousted president's face was uncovered, he appeared calm and said a brief prayer as Iraqi guards walked him to the gallows and put the noose round him. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L30803181 .htm"

Submission + - Apple dominates retail computer sales

BlueStraggler writes: Everybody knows that Apple is a bit player in the computer market. Except, it seems, for people who have been buying computers this past holiday season. Amazon's top sellers list is dominated by Apple, who claims the top 3 spots, and 10 of the top 25. The #1 computer sold by Amazon? The 13" MacBook 2Ghz Core 2 Duo. And #2 is the same computer again, in its previous rev (Core Duo), which implies that the MacBook holds top position by a serious margin. If holiday buying shows what people really want, rather than what they must put up with, what will happen to Apple's ranking once we go back to normal purchasing patterns?

Submission + - Ga.Supreme Court rejects teen's appeal in sex case

ArcLinux writes: "ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia Supreme Court has turned down an appeal from a teen who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for having sex with a 15-year-old. In a ruling released Friday, the court denied a motion for reconsideration filed by lawyers for Genarlow Wilson, who was 17 when he and the 15-year-old engaged in consensual oral sex. He was sentenced for aggravated child molestation. Wilson's case was one of two cases that were cited earlier this year when lawmakers passed a law that otherwise strengthened penalties for sex offenders, but reduced the penalty from a felony to a misdemeanor for some teenagers convicted of sodomy. Presiding Justice Carol Hunstein noted that in easing the penalties for teens, ''the Legislature expressly chose not to allow the provisions of the new amendments to affect persons convicted under the previous version of the statute.'' Hunstein added she was ''very sympathetic to Wilson's argument regarding the injustice of sentencing this promising young man with good grades and no criminal history to 10 years in prison without parole and a lifetime registration as a sexual offender because he engaged in consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old victim only two years his junior,'' but said the court was bound the by limits set by the Legislature. — http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/index.php?s=&url_ channel_id=32&url_article_id=22700&change_well_id= 2"
