You might have to provide a citation.

If law enforcement wants to access a place you regularly access, and a court commands you to provide that access, and you don't, you can bet that you will be seeing the inside of a jail cell pretty soon. In the real world, cops usually have the option to bash the door in, so they technically don't need your key... unless of course you have a particularly secure setup.

Claiming that you "lost" the key is analogous to claiming that you "forgot" the password. You would have an uphill battle convincing the judge if they can prove that you regularly access what they want access to.

Destroying the phone/records whatever is destroying evidence, and that might land you in jail too.

Nothing prevents you from making a strong door, and drug dealers do it all the time. You have that freedom right now. It is quite stupid to make a make such strong doors because of some very valid reasons. Real doors are not perfectly analogous to encryption, because a strong encryption does not have the power to kill you in case your house catches on fire.

I was more thinking that they want the encryption to be gone completely so that they can just look at whatever whenever they want... just imagine doors being outlawed completely just because someone could be committing a crime behind them!

If it has not been clear before, it should be painfully clear by now. Do not trust anyone, especially people with power.

The default should be secure, and if the authorities suspect anything, they should be able to go to a judge and get a warrant to go through your stuff, and the power to enforce it, like putting you in jail until you provide access to the bit that they are interested in. Digital locks are no different than physical locks.

Personally, I think the right to privacy trumps the need for law enforcement to be able to snoop on everybody's conversations just in case someone might be breaking the law.

Comment Requiring qualifications... Hmm (Score 1) 60

In the fight against mis-information, highlighting the qualifications of the person speaking may not be such a bad idea.

There is simply too much completely uninformed opinion that negatively impacts society as a whole.

Of course, freedom of speech says you can say anything you want. And this is why maybe it would be a good idea to have some sort of "qualifications" tab or region linked to your social media accounts. Then people can judge for yourself whether it's worth their time listening to you.

Personally, I like Ted talks for exactly this reason.

Right now it's not my favorite anymore. The thing that got me walking away was that they removed the capability to have multiple layers of tabs, and replaced it with.
Little by little Firefox removed every single feature that made them stand out from the crowd until now it's just another browser.

I was with you until you said that you the US should stay out of this fight, because it's not your fight.

The big, big problem with this fight is that as Russia absorbs smaller countries, it gets bigger and braver. Much like those games where you are a little fish that can only eat fish that are smaller than you, and so you keep eating and growing until you can get to the really big fish?

The first time it invaded another country the whole world should have been there, driving the foreign troops out of the country, and putting an end to this invading idea. That would have been the end of it, but no... since it's not your fight you stay out f it?

You just wait until it does become your fight? Do you realize that if you wait long enough you might have to face off against an enemy that you may not be able to win?

Of course, there is the not so insignificant matter of the US also invading other countries, and the whole world should have been just as strict with the US there. No more invasions!

Any country in the world should have the ability to ask for military assistance to protect it's sovereignty and borders.
