I agree that more often than not "modern design" is a certain indicator that I will hate the update. FF, Chrome, Gnome, GTK3, I am looking at you. Not everything is a tablet.

Having said that - if the screenshots of the new UI from the FOSDEM 2019 presentation (UI screenshots start on slide 20) are still accurate, however, this redesign looks quite okay.

The privacy policy states exactly the opposite, the messages are *heavily encrypted* - https://telegram.org/privacy#4.... It's a matter whom you choose to believe. Certainly not a random guy from the Internet.

My claim was that Telegram's backend servers are not open source, not that the messages are not encrypted on that platform. That is a different matter we cannot comment on and shows exactly the power of open source. We don't have to choose who to believe, as you put it.

But I agree the link was not optimal. Here is a better one, from Telegram itself: https://telegram.org/faq#q-why-not-open-source-everything

Why would this be a desirable outcome? If a group of people has an affinity for a particular task, we'd expect to see an over-representation of that group in a company that requires said task as part of its business. Different groups of people have slightly different interests. These differences get bigger at the tails of the distibution. It's completely okay to have more of a certain group if that is in line with their interests and everyone has equal opportunity to pursue their interests.

Switzerland has been neutral since 1815, explicitly as a result of the conflicts you just mentioned.

Switzerland has not participated in a war since then, even though remaining completely impartial turned out to be difficult during times. During World War II, when completely surrounded by Germany and Mussolini's Italy in the south, the Swiss allowed cargo trains through the Alps despite there were rumors that these trains actually transported Jewish people from Italy to Germany.

Reminds me about an old joke about Allied Forces being allowed to overfly Swiss territory:

Swiss air control to allied aircraft: You are approaching Swiss territory. Switzerland is neutral. Turn around.
Allied aircraft: We know.
Swiss air control: Turn around immediately, or we will shoot.
Allied aircraft: We know.
The Swiss shoot.
Allied aircraft: You are shooting too low. We fly higher than that.
Swiss air control: We know.

Yep. Tiny apartments in high-rise buildings cost between 500K and several million USD. Cost of raising a kid: 300K to the age of 20. Fruits seem to be made of gold, and at the moment, after the exceptionally long monsoon this summer, veggies are also crazy expensive.

The proposed amount won't do sh*t. But Governor Lee is not serous anyway - he is one of the likely contenders for the next presidential election and is simply catering to his base with statements like these.

Why did the editor add a [sic] here? There's no problem with the grammar in the sentence in question.

Unless you're a /. editor. Then you probably think adding '[sic]' every now and then sounds cool.
