Why use your ISP for DNS? Chances are their servers suck

I'd really consider seeing if you can find a better ISP (if it's possible in your area).

IMVHO, It's not too much to ask of an ISP that they have reliable and uninfested DNS.

Isn't that what the header packets are for? So each packet knows where it came from and where it's going?

Anycast breaks that though, because all servers in the anycast pool share the same address, so it confuses the server & clients when you add and remove servers from a pool.

But that already happens in numerous situations - governments run large NAT gateways / proxies, some 3G carriers use 10.0.0.0/8 and NAT/proxy, etc.

It's a perfectly valid issue *today*, not just in the future. Sure, it'll get worse, but at least there's now a solution in sight (ie., move to IPv6 to get better service).

Not really. By the time you're talking about LSN/CGN, you're talking about customers that send mail via their ISP's mailserver, not directly. Business customers wanting to send mail direct to the Internet without worrying about NAT making "their" IP look worse, will undoubtedly be able to buy a non-NATted IP.

Sure - and I'm sure that TVTropes could find advertisers willing to go directly with them.

It's also not an all-or-nothing necessarily; they could serve ads via a proxy (eg. an OpenX install) that picks either a direct advertiser ad or an AdWord ad, depending on impression levels.

tvtropes is very likely large enough to make it worthwhile.

I previously worked with a company that sold ~10-20M banner impressions per month (so, under that in raw pageviews) and it was more than worth our while dealing directly instead of via Google. Google AdWords paid very poorly in comparison to what our (energetic and talented :) ad salesman got us.

But there are.... issues. Like the autonumbering makes you want to axe murder somebody.

Asterisk quite happily talks to my home phone handset (which talks DECT on one side and SIP on the other) and my VoIP provider that I already had. I'm running it in the ample spare capacity on my Atom-based home server that I already had (which is my router, MythTV backend, web server, database server, NAS, ...).

I paid nothing to run Asterisk, and it's not a stretch to imagine home phones in a few years having enough compute capacity to run a two-channel Asterisk install without any drama.

If I buy a VHS copy of a movie, is it OK to download an HD Bluray rip? Despite being "the same movie", they're really quite different content.

It's not like you've got a DVD which is scratched and are downloading a DVD-rip, which (had your kids not just scribbled on the DVD with scissors) you could have reasonably generated yourself with your own ripping software.
