I just finished building a fairly complex Ramsey kit and was impressed by their level of detail. They even explain the circuit theory where it's important to understand how the thing works. While it lacks the professional fit and finish of Heathkit, it's a good first-kit experience for adults, and they have a huge variety of applications.

I have also built Ten-Tec and Elecraft kits. I wasn't too impressed with Ten-Tec - the circuit board had a fabrication error that I had to troubleshoot and figure out myself. Elecraft seems to be the new gold standard in ham kits. Their manuals are excellent and the equipment is top-notch. (Can't wait to get my hands on a K3)

The True Cost of SMS Messages 583

nilbog writes "What's the actual cost of sending SMS messages? This article does the math and concludes that, for example, sending an amount of data that would cost $1 from your ISP would cost over $61 million if you were to send it over SMS. Why has the cost of bandwidth, infrastructure, and technology in general plummeted while the price of SMS messages have risen so egregiously? How can carriers continue to justify the high cost of their apparent super-premium data transmission?"

"The original title of this book was 'Jimmy James, Capitalist Lion Tamer' but I see now that it's... 'Jimmy James, Macho Business Donkey Wrestler'... you know what it is... I had the book translated in to Japanese then back in again into English. Macho Business Donkey Wrestler... well there you go... it's got kind of a ring to it don't it? Anyway, I wanted to read from chapter three... which is the story of my first rise to financial prominence... I had a small house of brokerage on Wall Street.

Submission + - Florida-- it looks like its started already

stewwy writes: It looks like the the shenanigans have started already, the Register is running a story http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10/31/florida_te rminals_dont_cooperate/ about the difficulty early voters are having with casting votes for Democrats. It is possible, its just a lot harder to do as from the article the default setting of the machine seems to be Republican, No indication of the machine manufacturer yet
