Remember that someone who lives out the rest of their life starting to colonize Mars, even if highly successful in his or her work and providing great benefit to later colonizers, will be "killed" by the mission. Just like if they stay on Earth and retire, they will eventually be killed by old age on Earth. I have no problem "killing" Astronauts by sending them to Mars to start a successful colony there, and like other posters here I'm sure we can find willing participants willing to do it.
