Submission + - An interview with Mailbox founder Gentry Underwood (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "With 2013 now in full effect, many techies will be looking forward seeing the latest gadgets from the likes of Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft. However, for some (including us), one thing we’re really excited about is a new email app developed by the team behind Orchestra, dubbed Mailbox. Founder and CEO, Gentry Underwood, took a few minutes to answer some questions about himself, the company’s app, and his thoughts on solving problems."

Submission + - A talk with Statnut desiger Fabio Basile (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "‘It all started with the problem that I really wanted to see my followers and stats. After the app Ego got pulled from the App Store, there wasn’t an app that did this. So I designed this probably less than an hour, and I posted it on Dribbble because I just wanted to get feedback from people. I wasn’t expecting to design a final app myself. I was thinking that somebody would get the idea, run with it, make an app and sell it in the App Store.’"

Submission + - The Nexus 4: The best (yet unattainable) phone this holiday (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "f it was widely available right now for Christmas, I’d recommend the Nexus 4 as the phone to buy. Unfortunately, it isn’t available and there are huge backlogs, so you might be waiting a while. That said, I’d encourage you to hold off; the Nexus 4 is the best device on the market for the price, and it’s certainly the best Android device available right now. I would enthusiastically recommend it over the Galaxy SIII..."

Submission + - The third-party takeover of iOS (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "Third-party apps have started to become the best-in-class in iOS. This is good for third-party developers, users, and in the short-term, Apple. It gives third-parties, like Google, additional exposure and revenue. It provides better apps for users on iOS devices. And it helps sell more iOS devices for Apple. In the long-term, however, it may not work out so well for Apple."

Submission + - The wrong meaning of Web (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "There’s been some great discussion over the last few years about mobile first versus web first. Fred Wilson raised a lot of attention to this two years ago when he wrote a post entitled Mobile First Web Second. Then a couple of weeks ago Vibhu Norby wrote an excellent counter-article on why web should be first called Why We’re Pivoting from Mobile-first to Web-first.

I don’t believe this is the right way to think about the issue, though. I think we are using the wrong definition of ‘web.’"

Submission + - Why computer keyboards are dying (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "Lately I have been considering what a next-level computing experience looks like (an integrated hardware and software solution). I’ve been imagining the role of gestural mapping, holograms and 3D space, all of which I will likely discuss in more depth at some point. But before we get to the fancy stuff, there is one aspect of the “navigation” experience that is ripe for innovation – and that is the computer keyboard."

Submission + - How the Apple TV will work (thetechblock.com) 2

thetechblock writes: "There has been lots of talk in the past year about Apple possibly releasing an actual Apple Television or an updated Apple TV set-top box that will revolutionize television as we know it. It’ll bypass the cable and satellite companies and make direct deals with the networks that will allow customers to choose exactly what channels or shows they want to watch all wrapped in a pretty interface. Well, this isn’t going to happen, at least not anytime soon. Don’t fret, an Apple TV is still coming and using what we know about the television industry and Apple I don’t think it’s hard to determine how it might function."

Submission + - Cancer takes one on the chin, courtesy of a six year old girl (nytimes.com)

An anonymous reader writes: For decades, one of cancer's most powerful weapons has been to corrupt the human immune system. Finally, researchers in Philadelphia have developed a way to turn that weapon against certain cancers, and potentially open the door to a whole new generation of therapies for all manner of cancers

Submission + - Rethinking the iPhone lockscreen (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "iOS is boring. It’s unconnected. It isn’t flexible. It’s slow. That’s generally the consensus. And while many look to Jony Ive’s new role as the answer, it doesn’t exactly solve these problems. So I thought I would give it a shot."
Microsoft

Submission + - The future of Microsoft and Apple (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "2013 is a pivotal year for Microsoft. Either it breaks free of the Windows shackles or it is destined to become a second rate company. Apple’s pivotal year is probably further out. Its recent new products assure a good 2013. But its moment of truth isn’t that far away and Apple’s stock may reflect its ultimate destiny before 2013 is over."

Submission + - Why everyone loves the iPad mini (even though the screen sucks) (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "I was hanging out in downtown SF the other day, and of course I had to visit the Apple Store to play with the new iPad Mini. Everyone pretty much ignored the all-new New iPad (let’s refer to it as iPad 4), while there was a 3-deep queue to play with the mini. I even seriously considered buying one on the spot (pending availability). So why are people going gaga over the mini, when the iPad 4 is actually a much bigger refresh in terms of hardware? (iPad 4 is a generational leap in both CPU and graphics performance)."

Submission + - Skeuomorphism and the user interface (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "Skeuomorphism is something that users have come to expect in apps for iPhone, iPad and even the Mac these days. It’s easily recognisable, and Apple has mainly been responsible for bringing simulacra back to user interface design in the past few years with iOS, and then extending that to the desktop with OS X Mountain Lion. Let’s start by clearing up some confusion and common mistakes about some recent terminology that’s being thrown around."

Submission + - Android and iOS share showdown (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "This is the first in a series of two posts about how iOS and Android are performing in two key areas: software updates and installed base growth. In this first installment, I will look at how the two platforms have succeeded in bringing the latest features to their users. Much of the data in this post originated in my first post on the subject, iOS Ebb and Flow."

Submission + - iPad mini review (video) (thetechblock.com)

thetechblock writes: "“iPad.”

You’d find yourself hard-pressed to say the word without most people knowing exactly what you’re talking about.

It’s a device that made its debut less than 3 years ago, yet it’s had a profound impact on computing. A 9.7-inch multi-touch glass display capable of displaying anything your heart desires. A device that Apple has sold more than 100 million units of in just a few years. And now, there’s a smaller one."
