Vista Family Discount Keys Found Not Compatible 394

acousticiris writes "Many (if not all) users who took advantage of Microsoft's Vista Family Discount have been issued invalid installation keys and cannot install Windows Vista Home Premium. Microsoft says, 'There is no expected time period for a fix at this time.' According to the article, the keys are valid for something, just not Windows Vista. Perhaps it's just too simple to issue these folks new keys and send them on their way."

Submission + - Vertical Axis Wind Revolution

Sterling D. Allan writes: "Historically, vertical axis turbines have lagged behind horizontal prop turbine designs. That may be changing with TMA Global Wind Energy System's vertical axis design. Not only are they cost competitive with the best horizontal turbine designs, but they have numerous other advantages such low visible profile, no bird strikes, low vibrations, essentially no electromagnetic disruption of communications. You can also fit more of them on the same real estate size to generate more energy. It looks as though vertical axis wind technology may now take the lead."

Submission + - FL Gov. wants touch-screen voting machines gone

An anonymous reader writes: Eager to end six troublesome years of touch screen voting in Florida, Gov. Charlie Crist wants every county to switch to paper ballots by 2008.

Crist will ask the Legislature to spend more than $30-million to replace touch screens with an optical scan system that allows a voter to mark an oval next to a candidate's name before slipping a ballot into an electronic reader — the same way absentee ballots are cast.

The change would affect a majority of the state's voters living in 15 mostly urban counties, including Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco.

The focus of Schneier's latest research is on brain heuristics and perceptions of security, which may be the basis for the best-selling author's next book. His goal for the topic, which he'll be presenting at the RSA Conference next week, is to focus on how people think, and feel, about security, and how neuroscience can help explain how our perception of risk doesn't always match reality."

DarkHelmet writes: Grant Gross from the IDG News Service reports that a trade group gives the U.S. government a low cybersecurity grade. From the article: 'The CSIA, a trade group representing cybersecurity vendors, gave the U.S. government D grades in three areas: security of sensitive information, security and reliability of critical infrastructure, and federal government information assurance.' And everyone thought that the government had all this secret technology from the aliens...

Submission + - Wanted: Home-builders for the moon

el crowbar writes: NASA announced the broad outlines of its plan for an eventual lunar outpost less than two months ago. The general idea is to set up shop on the rim of a crater near one of the moon's poles. Such areas would be in sunlight, with a line-of-sight link to Earth all year round. The first crews would stay for just a week at a time, but by 2025, six-month tours of duty would be the norm. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16871258/

Submission + - Jobs' "Ball and Chain" Remark About Java D

jg21 writes: Java Developer's Journal has published an article sampling the current debate triggered by Steve Jobs's declaration that "Java's not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It's this big heavyweight ball and chain." The views of Bruce Eckel feature prominently. Eckel says of Java: "It was admirable once, but a language only evolves if its designers and advocates can acknowledge problems. Pretending that a language is successful in places where it's not is just denial." Another software veteran, Steve Benfield the former CTO of Silverstream, says he has abandoned Java for Flex.
