Comment Nokia are foolish (Score 1) 286

The last thing the mobile industry needs is Apple buying out its competitors as this would create less choice. Nokia does indeed have an agreement in place with MS for them to provide Windows mobile for their smartphone devices so I don't see how a buyout of Nokia could go ahead with that in place. Nokia really shot themselves in the foot by not adapting to change in the mobile market. They have made stupid decisons like killing off their Meego line of devices and not adopting Android.

Comment Desktops PCs are not going anywhere (Score 1) 625

I always here these premature death warnings about the demise of the desktop. It happens every year yet the desktop still marches on. and will continue to do so for the following reasons: 1. Corporate customers are the biggest market for desktops and that isn't going to change much if at all 2. Enthusiasts and gamers use desktops because the hardware is cost effective and one can pick and choose components 3. Desktop PCs are more powerful than any similar speced laptop and often cheaper

Comment Utter rubbish ... (Score 1) 780

This is a completely stupid and ill-informed article. The real problem lies with Apple's proprietary junk hardware and their intolerance for users running anything other than that dreaded Mac OS X. Hence the real lemon is Apple and it's overpriced hardware. Linux can easily adapt to any hardware platform - the same can't be said about OS X and it's bastardized implementation of BSD.

You're not looking hard enough if you think Demonoid was the main place to find obscure content. There are many file hosting sites and even Usenet binaries which have even more obscure stuff. Secondly, it's a bit stupid to admit you pirate content on a site like this given the amount of surveillance that this site is subjected to.

Comment Microsoft are crooks (Score 1) 549

MicroFAIL is now abusing trusted computing technology in a blatant and desperate attempt to lock out competing operating systems for PCs. They have no claim to the PC architecture itself and should not be allowed to make it proprietary in order ot advance their own monopolistic agenda. When will the ignorant userbase wake up and realise that MicroFAIL are criminals who refuse to play fairly and are a serious threat to ones privacy and freedoms ? In this day and age people do NOT need Microsoft products to get real work done. There are plenty of free alternative operating systems to Windows and if your requirements are modest then one does not need MicroFail Junkware at all. Do your homework and don't be fooled by MicroFAIL spin and propaganda.

Comment The CLI is essential for power users (Score 1) 1134

The CLI is for power users and those who want to do some digging for themselves. The day they drop the CLI from an OS is the day all end-users will be treated as retards, if they haven't already. MicroCrap is slowly removing all useful functionality from the CLI whilst Canonical is making it harder to access the cli in Ubuntu to get useful work done. Both companies are hostile to users having control over their own desktop. Google is probably the worst offender with it's blatant privacy abuses and proprietary use of FOSS code but that's another issue alltogether.

Comment Ubuntu 12.04 is long term insanity (Score 1) 543

Ubuntu 12.04 is still a bloated mess and unless you're a masochist who likes to tinker, then Gnome Classic is not a suitable desktop alternative either. The only sane desktop environments left now are Xfce, LXDE, Cinnamon and many smaller lightweight DE's like openbox. Debian is the only real option for proven stability and customization. These bloated Debian spinoffs are a world of hurt.

Comment Linux Desktop Environments (Score 1) 194

Desktop environments like Unity & Gnome 3 Shell were designed by misguided lunatics with no concept of what makes a good graphical user interface. They have basically given power users the big finger and are now treating all users like brain dead simpletons. It's bad enough that such moronic interfaces are being offerred by default but now core functionality is being ripped out of Linux distros in a lame effort to make them simpler ? I fail to see the logic here - it seems to me this is all about taking control away from the user and restricting what they can do. Well I for one say F**k off and let me choose my own desktop which works the way I want. Which is why I run Debian.
