you can use hangouts just fine on a desktop, altough a real desktop app would be better, they have a chrome extension which works pretty fine, plus you can use it within gmail which is a plus.
Just improve Gtalk/Hangouts/whatever the new name is.
Two different OS, but from a single vendor. Also from what I understand, iMessage on MacOS/iPad-without-cellular is limited if you don't have an iPhone/iPad-with-cellular.
I agree that it is stupid to design a messaging protocol based on a phone number as an identifier. It's the main reason why WhatsApp on PC is unavailable.
What I don't understand is that even people here on slashdot praise these crappy proprietary messaging solutions and some even use / apologize the use of one of the worst of them all, iMessage/FaceTime, which is only available on a single platform in addition to being proprietary and non standard.

On average, paid apps are probably crappier than free apps. How many "I am rich", or paid fart apps do you need?
I look at the apps I like and use the most. They are all free. Gmail, Google Photo, Firefox, Maps, to name a few.
There is already the vibrating and the silent mode (with LED notification). I don't need a second device. Fitness tracking, maybe. But they already sell heart rate monitor watches without Android and they run just fine, with longer battery.
I still don't get why I should want one. I still have to carry my phone anyways. And it can show me the time just fine, so I don't even need a watch.

Uber insures all drivers in the US under a commercial insurance policy, and always has. Are you trying to claim that they work differently in Canada?

Nope, no different in Canada. That is at least Ontario, you may need to check if they do in your section of Canada. Though I can't imagine it would be different for some reason.
It is. Unless Uber explicitely gets an agreement with a city/province, it doesn't insure drivers in Canada. The deal with Ontario is very recent (2 months). Before that (for much of Uber's history in the province), it was the driver's responsibility to be insured. Most didn't bothered.
There is no Canada-wide Uber-provided insurance for drivers.
