Comment The Trends at Google/Youtube (Score 2) 1416

Kind of disappointing to see them fold so quickly over something so minor, but then, as a soon to no longer be Youtube Red subscriber (just for the commercials, not any of their bland original nonsense), I'm not surprised by any of this.

I subscribe to a lot of different channels from gaming to science to entertainment and politics and almost every single content producer has complained about the new algorithms that have forced most of them to either greatly cut back (it becomes just a hobby for them) or they have to ramp up to lower quality daily videos (which I can't and don't really desire to keep up with). And many of the people I'm watching are apologizing and explaining why they've been force to do it. I feel bad for them. But it's also destroyed what I once loved.

And now they're talking about censoring anything controversial. Ok, well not censoring, but making it so you can't like, share, monetize and it won't show up in recommendations, meaning yeah, censor. Like most normal people, I like controversial. It's fun. Google execs are not (God that place has to suck to work).

Youtube has been so much more valuable to me than Netflix ever was, but it's gone off a cliff in the past year due to poor management decisions. It's such a shame, there really isn't a viable alternative.

It's more the CEO (and other execs) who need to be fired, not this poor sap.

Comment Who knows, with their new ratings system? (Score 1) 193

I actually liked the Get Down. It may have not had the viewership it needed, but it had enough stars and I gave it a shot. But once they did away with the stars and replaced it with thumbs/up and down, I no longer trust the recommendations. Especially on their in-house shows. I don't think I've given a new Netflix show a shot since then. Especially after seeing previously 1-star trash rise to "98% recommended" overnight (whatever that means).

Thumbs up/down isn't granular enough for me, so I don't even rate stuff anymore. My previous ratings were almost always somewhere in the middle. This in turn just makes the algorithm even worse over time.

With so many other streaming services out there and an increasingly limited selection on Netflix, I can actually see myself unsubbing someday. I'd almost rather go back to a pay-for-whatever-you-want Vudu option instead. Not sure that it would be that much more expensive, over time (might even be cheaper). And I just don't find myself watching Netflix that much anymore. I just wish their algorithm worked better.

That's the thing though, internet memers aren't news worthy. This should have never been a story, regardless of what Trump tweets. There is no other way to interpret this, other than as a grudge from a disconnected corporation that couldn't handle a joke.

And then there's this line:

"In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same."

If you think he came up with this himself, I've got a bridge to sell you. It's a freakin' meme. Nobody cares except CNN and this guys lawyers.

You can read it any way you want, but they outline everything they might retaliate against him for. Or to put their article another way:

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of this change:

* He retracts his apology.
* He fails to show remorse for posting a wrestling video.
* He ever posts a meme again.

Comment Re:"Threat" is a matter of perspective (Score 1) 944

Not really. He claimed he was concerned for his safety and CNN flat out said that protection of his anonymity was dependent on his public contrition and refrainment from meme posting in the future. That's is pretty much a direct threat, not "a matter of perspective."

And no, I'm no fan of Trump. But then, I don't think he's the anti-Christ either. This issue has little to do with him IMO.

Comment Yes, but for different reasons. (Score 1) 316

For me, it's all of the inflated reviews that are killing the movies for me. There was a time when you could trust the RT reviews (within reason). But some of the worst movies I've seen, in recent years, were all in the high 90s on RT. All the hype, marketing and junkets had led me to wait a year or so before finally watching a movie. By then, things have settled down, and you can get a true idea for how you'll like a movie, from user comments (and rarely ever, professional reviews).

Comment Re:ESPN? (Score 1) 120

Yeah, I liked that one. It's a shame it got so overhyped though. Not sure I would have appreciated it as much, had I watched it after all of the buzz. But I guess all of that buzz underscores what you were saying.

The only other show that I've been impressed with lately has been Better Call Saul. It may not be as fast moving as its predecessor (perhaps a disappointment for some), but the story draws you in, there's no agenda and I'm not frustrated with how stupid all of the characters are. The characters are all different, but you actually get a feel what it's like to be in their shoes, rather than just siding with one over another.
