I was having trouble remembering the details. I finally found a good breakdown of the transition and it even explains why the Next portion (renamed Rhapsody and eventually Yellow Box). Mac OS X was originally classic app support (Blue Box) and Next app support (Yellow Box). I never knew why it failed but the sight suggests license agreements Next had entered into prior to the merger were baked into the OS and Apple couldn't sell the OS at a lower price without removing the licensed material which also removed functionality and compatibility.

The Next Mach kernel was jettisoned and replaced with BSD. Next was derived from BSD as well but its kernel was hybrid in nature and allowed for unprecedented access to the hardware without sacrificing safety and security from hackers. While Apple kept the naming nomenclature of Next virtually none of what made Next OS special remain.

Steven Job's venture into Next computing may not have panned out in the hardware space but the NextStep OS was exquisite! We replaced out Intel 386 systems with Next Cubes and the world never looked the same. I was hopeful when Jobs rejoined Apple and Next OS was slated to replace the MacOS. Sadly the programmers at Apple were completely inept and the bulk of Next OS was jettisoned!
