Submission + - DARPA Funds Autonomous UAV Refueling.

gilgsn writes: Planenews reports on DARPA announcing the award of a $33 million contract to Northrop Grumman Corporation to demonstrate aerial refueling of a NASA Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle by a sister ship. The program will be designated KQ-X. I can't imagine the real-time programming challenge that would be.

Submission + - U.S. Army Funding New Spy Airship. (planenews.com)

gilgsn writes: A new hybrid airship weapons system, just larger than the length of a football field, will take to the skies in just 18 months to provide an unblinking, persistent eye for more than three weeks at a time to aid U.S. Army troops in Afghanistan, according to Northrop Grumman Corporation Officials.

Submission + - Boeing 'Phantom Eye' Hydrogen Powered Vehicle. (planenews.com)

gilgsn writes: The Boeing Company has begun to build Phantom Eye, its first unmanned, liquid-hydrogen powered, high altitude long endurance (HALE) demonstrator aircraft. “The essence of Phantom Eye is its propulsion system,” said Darryl Davis, Boeing Phantom Works president. “After five years of technology development, we are now deploying rapid prototyping to bring together an unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV] with a breakthrough liquid-hydrogen propulsion system that will be ready to fly early next year.”

Submission + - How do you find out how much your site is worth? 3

gilgsn writes: Many of us own websites. For some it is just a hobby, but we all hope to cash in sometime after years of efforts and much money spent. I tried to got to website value calculators online, not expecting miracles, and I got values from $82 to $16,549.41. Do any of these sites come close to approximating a site value? How do you estimate a site's selling price? Advertising revenue, number of visitors, pagerank? What is the best way?

Submission + - FBI uses man's photo to create Bin Laden (canoe.ca)

innocent_white_lamb writes: The FBI has acknowledged using a photo of a Spanish politician to create an image of Osama Bin Laden that they have posed on their "Wanted -Reward Offered" website. They downloaded a photo of the man from the Internet. He is now afraid to travel to the USA because so many airports use biometrics to identify "terrorists" and he is now Bin Laden!

Submission + - SPAM: NASA: Options dwindling for Mars Spirit rover

coondoggie writes: NASA says it is narrowing a short list of things its scientists can to extricate its stuck Mars Spirit rover. NASA said it exploring a couple remaining options, such as driving backwards and using Spirit's robotic arm to sculpt the ground directly in front of the left-front wheel, the only working wheel the arm can reach. The amount of energy that Spirit has each day however is declining as autumn days shorten on southern Mars, NASA stated. NASA said it is currently analyzing results of a Jan. 13th attempt to move the spacecraft that involved a very slow rotation of the wheels. Earlier drives in the past two weeks using wheel wiggles and slow wheel rotation produced only negligible progress toward extricating Spirit, NASA stated.

Submission + - At last a flying car that actually flies. (planenews.com)

gilgsn writes: Planenews is reporting on Terrafugia using Dassault Systèmes modeling software to produce a street-legal airplane. Or is it an airport legal car? The prototype has actually flown and looks great. The Transition Roadable Aircraft can cruise up to 450 miles at 115+ mph, take off and land at local airports, drive at highway speeds on any road and fit in a normal suburban garage space. The two-seat vehicle has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight, transforming from plane to car in thirty seconds. Both modes are powered by unleaded automobile gasoline. By giving pilots a convenient ground transportation option, the Transition reduces the cost, inconvenience and weather sensitivity of personal aviation.

Submission + - DARPA Wants a VTOL Transformer Flying Car.

gilgsn writes: Planenews is reporting on DARPA hosting a January Proposers' Day Workshop on the Transformer Program, which objective is to demonstrate a 1 to 4 person transportation vehicle that can drive and fly, thus enabling the occupants to avoid water, difficult terrain, and road obstructions as well as IED and ambush threats. The vehicle will be capable of driving on prepared surface and light off-road conditions, while flight functionality will require Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL). Quite an ambitious program considering that past projects like the Moller Flying Car never really took-off..

Submission + - NASA Flight Tests Unique Jumbo Jet. (planenews.com)

gilgsn writes: As reported by Planenews, NASA tested a jumbo jet that will help scientists unlock the origins of the universe. Infrared observations reached a milestone Friday when doors covering the plane’s telescope were fully opened in flight. The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, a modified 747 jet known as SOFIA, flew for one hour and 19 minutes, which included two minutes with the telescope’s doors fully opened.

Submission + - Boeing Dreamliner Successful First Flight. (planenews.com)

gilgsn writes: The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has just landed after a successful first flight. The article was posted on Planenews, along with videos and the official Boeing press release. The 787 took-off Paine field this morning. “The airplane flies very nicely, there were no surprises and the aircraft performed as we expected.” is the comment we heard most during the Boeing press conference after the flight. Better late, more than two years late, than never.
