Microsoft Behind Google Complaints To EC 346

justice4all writes to share that some of the recent complaints to the European Commission about Google have apparently been coming from Microsoft. "A lawyer for Microsoft confirmed that the software giant told the US Department of Justice and the European Commission how Google’s business practices may be harming publishers, advertisers and competition in search and online advertising. [...] 'Google’s algorithms learn less common search terms better than others because many more people are conducting searches on these terms on Google. These and other network effects make it hard for competing search engines to catch up. Microsoft’s well-received Bing search engine is addressing this challenge by offering innovations in areas that are less dependent on volume. But Bing needs to gain volume too, in order to increase the relevance of search results for less common search terms.'"

I find myself surprisingly on the side of the convictors in this case. I don't care if every stupid video of some cretin doing something nasty gets posted publicly; free speech is a great thing, but it should not be Google's position to blindly defend it. Providing a place for this kind of media results in a gray area for the behavior depicted.

Copyright belongs to the person behind the camera, admittedly. However, responsibility for showing to the world mistreatment of living beings does fall to Google for *not* screening it privately first.

There can be other places to post videos of cruel behavior; Google does not to staunchly defend people's rights here, and unless they mean to, they should admit responsibility and discontinue allowing inappropriate media to be posted. If they don't want to provide the resources for financial or other reason, fine. Stop allowing posting altogether and get out of the video-hosting business. If they want to provide a place for people to show their true selves, however, they should be prepared to defend them or accept punishment on their behalf.

With New SDK, VoIP Over 3G Apps Now Working On iPhone 171

silverpig writes "Yesterday marked the announcement of the Apple iPad device, and with it came a new version of the SDK. In this new version, Apple has lifted the VoIP over 3G restrictions that limited VoIP traffic to wifi only. This morning, Fring announced that its iPhone app is 3G-capable starting immediately. No update is needed as apparently the app had 3G capability all along, but a server-side block prevented its use. Furthermore, apparently a 3G-capable version of Skype has been ready for some time now, and has been waiting for this restriction to be lifted."

Samsung does have a line of netbooks (mostly same spec as everyone else, but oooh! colors!) and presumably regular laptops, but I can't believe no one's pointed out on this thread that enlightenment is meant for mobile devices, and since Samsung currently has a meagre Android lineup, apparently replacing their Instinct line with the Moment, this sponsorship could finally lead them to market dominance in one area, when they have spread themselves thin trying to be an everything company. This is their one foothold on making a unique and great interactive experience.

Being an Android and Enlightenment fan (and current Instinct S30 owner), I will be following this closely -- and trying OpenGEU, since someone mentioned it earlier.
