I'm shocked. How upper management types keep justifying this model with "lower costs" is completely beyond me.

Submission + - Ubuntu 12.04 a disaster? 5

Dr_Ish writes: When Ubuntu moved from version 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS, the process looked pretty slick. There was no need to do a complete re-install, save all those files, etc. However, it seems to be slowly emerging that the transition may be far from smooth. Ubuntu forums are currently flooded with reports of system freezes and crashes. To make matters worse, no solution has been offered, other than generic suggestions about updating drivers and the last. Although the move to the Unity desktop was already controversial, this could be the nail in the coffin if the Ubuntu ascendancy. That being said, it may be a boon for alternative distros, like Mint, if Ubuntu does not address the issue rapidly.

Submission + - Facebook, Zuckerberg sued over IPO (cnet.com)

mrquagmire writes: Facebook shareholders have sued the social network, CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and a number of banks, alleging that crucial information was concealed ahead of Facebook's IPO.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan this morning, charges the defendants with failing to disclose in the critical days leading up to Friday's initial public offering "a severe and pronounced reduction" in forecasts for Facebook's revenue growth, as users more and more access Facebook through mobile devices, according to Reuters, which cited a law firm for the plaintiffs.

Comment Trust?? (Score 5, Insightful) 1128

There is no "trust" in science - there is nothing to "believe." Science is just the application of logic and reason to help explain the world around us. So what this article is really saying is that "Conservatives view of the world has dramatically departed reality since 1970." Which sounds pretty plausible to me.

...maybe we should start. The US government seems to be the only one in the world that doesn't display any interest in keeping its own businesses here and employed with its own citizens.

I'm not saying we should go out and steal foreign companies' IP, but our government really does need to step up and start protecting its citizens jobs and creating an environment where businesses don't have an incentive to move production, profits, taxes, and jobs overseas.

Comment I just did this (Score 2) 291

I actually gave a presentation this week that went over very well. Here's what I did:
  • * Kept it short and simple. No one wants to sit through a long boring presentation unless they absolutely have to.
  • * Started off with a slightly self depreciating joke to lighten the mood.
  • * Used good graphics and animations to keep interest.
  • * Kept my slides uncluttered so people actually read and understood what I put on there.
  • * Used a slow and clear speaking voice so everyone can hear what I was saying.
  • * Tried as much as I could to not show my nerves and I came prepared. Most people don't want to see others stumble and struggle though a bad presentation.

It's not a security update. This update is more like a complete rewrite and has very little to do with Microsoft. You see, for their first attempt Ford decided to outsource the project to a company called BSQUARE who put the UI together using Adobe Flash Lite. For some reason, the results were slightly less than stellar.

Anyway, the preliminary reviews of the new version sound promising so I am at least a little hopeful. I am still quite frustrated, however, that I've had to deal with such awful software for well over a year on a brand new vehicle that cost almost $40k.

What's the story here? It is completely legal in this great country of ours for companies to bribe, err I mean donate money to political figures. Remember, corporations are "people" and money is "free speech." And it's also business as usual for cronies, err I mean politicians, to give preferential treatment to their buddies.

So what's different about this deal that warranted an article describing something that happens every day here?
