Comment British weapons maker? (Score 1) 24

Very curious characterization of BAE (full disclosure: I'm an employee of their North American Electronic Systems division). They are the third largest aerospace contractor in the world (after Lockheed Martin and Boeing), and it's my understanding that the majority of their work is on air and maritime platforms. Something like half their business is in the commercial sector. Yes, they make weapons systems too, but I don't believe that's a significant portion of their business.

Comment Re:Not the first analog/continuous computer (Score 1) 65

As a Freshman in 1981 I took an intro to Comp Sci class. Among other blunders, the professor claimed that the difference between analog and digital computers was that the former were mechanical, while the latter were electrical. (As a ham radio operator, I was familiar with the Heathkit electronic analog computer available at the time.) I canceled the class, switched majors to archaeology, and never looked back.

Comment Re:Next mystery: Why start the week on Sunday FFS? (Score 1) 97

I work for a large engineering company that makes use of the "9/80" schedule. One week we work 9-hour days Mon-Thu, then an 8-hour day on Friday. The following week we work 9-hour days Mon-Thu and have Friday off - so 80 hours every two weeks with every other Friday off. Most people like it, but it's based on a fiction: In order to not be required to pay overtime the first (44-hour) week, they tell us our week ends "mid-shift on Friday" - so the next week begins 1/2 hour before my lunchtime on Friday! I don't want to buck the cart, but I don't think that's how "weekends" works!
