Medicine

Submission + - Did Alternative Medicine Contribute to Steve Jobs' (skeptoid.com) 9

ideonexus writes: "An aspect of Steve Jobs' battle with cancer that the media has been glossing over is the fact that Jobs' spent nine months pursuing alternative therapies to treat his tumor before finally having it surgically removed as modern medicine recommended. Jobs' particular form of pancreatic cancer was very treatable and had a high survival rate, but his delay in seeking professional medical treatment moved him into the low survival rate group.

This raises the question, how could someone as wealthy and intelligent as Steve Jobs do something so foolish as to completely disregard modern medicine in treating such a life-threatening disease? And how much money did Jobs' "naturopath" make off of prescribing a clinically-unproven diet that delayed an effective treatment and dramatically reduced his chances of survival?"

This is another proof that no Mainstream company can ever ignore linux in the long run. the beauty of linux is such that it scales to sub $100 smartphone and HPC . I bet any OS this planet can do that. sure there are patent problems sorrounding it but thats not going to stop companies from adopting. Nokia should have a plan B if they dont get hit with windows smartphone otherwise they are doomed forever. they know this . thats the reason they are doing this . Nokia backed of Meego and announced symbain wil wont that long but u should have a alternative for tat plan. and this is that alternative . unless MS mole stephen elop tries to do something nasty with windows smartphone i think Nokia wil be a hit with this model. ALL the best Nokia. lets wait for a great sub $100 phone.

If microsoft says that every android device violates their patents then its nothing but just a Extortion racket they are building up by threatening other vendors. Im glad that a company like B & N has balls where as HTC and samsung c not. I'm never buying any windows product ever in my life again. lets start boycotting all MS products. OTOH why Department of Justice/antitrust regularities cannot look into deals like this?

angry tapir writes: "German researchers have given a new meaning to window shopping. At the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute showed a prototype that lets shoppers learn more about what's in a store display window when the store is closed. Called the Interactive Shop Window the system consists of a flat screen monitor and a motion tracker positioned behind the glass of a store's front window."

Submission + - Linux Kernel 3.1 RC4 has been Released (marc.info)

sunr2007 writes: "I don't know what to say about this one. -rc3 had fewer new commits
than -rc4 does, and I don't like that trend. I'm not happy about the
size of some of the changes (iscsi target, some other random drivers),
but at the same time I have to say that absolutely nothing here makes
me feel worried. Most of the changes are *really* trivial, and the
ones that are a bit bigger tend to be to pretty esoteric areas. For
example, sparc shows up in the dirstat as one of the bigger changes,
and that's just because there's a biggish signal handling change to
fix a rather obscure test. But for the life of me I can't really get
worried about it."

Submission + - Firefox Has 6000 Bugs, Community Leader Leaves (conceivablytech.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Mozilla does not discuss product problems behind closed doors and employees or key contributors rarely sugarcoat their opinions. A blog post published by Community Lead Tyler Downer rocks Mozilla as he claims that Mozilla Triage QA process is broken and he believes that the current rapid release process drowns Firefox in a sea of bugs with no land in sight.

Submission + - Nokia get hacked, developer data leaked (nokia.com)

An anonymous reader writes: "During our ongoing investigation of the incident we have discovered that a database table containing developer forum members' email addresses has been accessed, by exploiting a vulnerability in the bulletin board software that allowed an SQL Injection attack. Initially we believed that only a small number of these forum member records had been accessed, but further investigation has identified that the number is significantly larger. The database table records includes members’ email addresses and, for fewer than 7% who chose to include them in their public profile, either birth dates, homepage URL or usernames for AIM, ICQ, MSN, Skype or Yahoo. However, they do not contain sensitive information such as passwords or credit card details and so we do not believe the security of forum members’ accounts is at risk. Other Nokia accounts are not affected.

We are not aware of any misuse of the accessed data, but we are communicating with affected forum members, though we believe the only potential impact to them may be unsolicited email. Nokia apologizes for this incident.
Though the initial vulnerability was addressed immediately, we have now taken the developer community website offline as a precautionary measure, while we conduct further investigations and security assessments. We hope to get the site back online as soon as possible and will post developments here in the meantime."
Except it has been used maliciously, I've seen an increase, from none, of very targeted phishing attempts using Nokia Developer details against an email address I used specifically for the account.
