The previous gen. NV Cards don't do DX11, thus where running this bench in DX10 mode. Which is kind of a misleading thing for THG to do, while they explained it in the text they should have made seperate chart for those two modes to make it clear on thirst glance. There is a comparison of image quality in Unigine Benchark (DX10 vs. DX11) out there somewhere, and the difference is night and day.

In civ4, catapults do only damage part of the units in a stack.
So if i send a stack of of 30 Units on attack, and AI smashes a Catapult against that, only a few units will get damaged. A sizeable amount of catapults you have to worry, put when there just a few you can in practise just ignore them mostly.
The only thing cats are really strong at is in city-attack, because they can bombard defences and you can promote them to get a bonus at it.

They could of course change the game-balance so that catapults would damage a stack more, but then there would be crys that catapults are overpowered and need to be nerfed. Better to do away with the "50 units on same square" silliness.

Scientists and Lawyers Argue For Open US DNA Database 120

chrb writes "New Scientist has an article questioning the uniqueness of DNA profiles. 41 scientists and lawyers recently published a high-profile Nature article (sub. required) arguing that the FBI should release its complete CODIS database. The request follows research on the already released Arizona state DNA database (a subset of CODIS) which showed a surprisingly large number of matches between the profiles of different individuals, including one between a white man and a black man. The group states that the assumption that a DNA profile represents a unique individual, with only a minuscule probability of a secondary match, has never been independently verified on a large sample of DNA profiles. The new requests follow the FBI's rejection of similar previous requests."

Keeping the P4 may Cost lest, and Cost can also be an indicator of total power consumed. It's not only about the power running through the socket where the Computer is plugged in, but also about manufacturing costs of the components. I'm still typing this on a P4. It's plenty fast enough for office work. The CPU is idle most of the time, and in that state even a P4 doesn't use that much power.

Submission + - SPAM: Stallman calls on EU to set MySQL free

An anonymous reader writes: Richard Stallman demanded the EU to cut MySQL loose from Oracle yesterday, Oct 20, in an open letter to Brussels' competition supremo Neelie Kroes. The self-described software freedom activist's intervention came just a day after MySQL founder Monty Widenius made a similar call, saying that Oracle could offset the EU's go-slow examination of its purchase of Sun by simply putting MySQL on the block. ... "If Oracle is allowed to acquire MySQL, it will predictably limit the development of the functionality and performance of the MySQL software platform, leading to profound harm to those who use MySQL software to power applications," he claims.

Submission + - Apple: apply handcream to avoid iPod shocks (pcpro.co.uk)

Barence writes: "Apple is urging iPod owners to apply hand lotion and to stay out of the wind to prevent getting an electric shock from their device. The advice comes from a safety warning posted on the Apple website, which warns of the possibility of getting a static electricity shock from the earbuds of an iPod or iPhone. The safety tips include using a humidifier to raise the moisture level in the air indoors, applying anti-static hand lotion if you have dry skin, and even changing your wardrobe. "Try clothes with natural fibres since synthetic fibres are more likely to hold a static charge," Apple suggests."

Submission + - Meet the ancestor: 47-million-year-old human link (theage.com.au) 1

peterc_150 writes: "Scientists in New York unveiled on Tuesday the skeleton of what they said could be the common ancestor to humans, apes and other primates. The tiny creature, officially known as Darwinius masillae, but dubbed Ida, lived 47 million years ago and is unusually well preserved, missing only part of a leg, or five per cent of the skeleton. The unveiling of Ida, a perfectly preserved fossil thought to be the most complete primate skeleton ever discovered.

The monkey-like creature was preserved through the ages in Germany's Messel Pit, a crater rich in Eocene Epoch fossils. Although bearing a long tail, she had several human characteristics, including an opposable thumb, short arms and legs, and forward facing eyes.

"This is the first link to all humans — truly a fossil that links world heritage," Prof Hurum said in a statement. David Attenborough, the renowned British naturalist and broadcaster, said the "little creature is going to show us our connection with all the rest of the mammals".

Ida gives a glimpse into a time when the world was just taking its present shape. Dinosaurs were extinct, the Himalayas were forming and a huge range of mammals thrived in vast jungles. Her last meal shows she was a herbivore. Gut contents revealed remains of fruits, seeds and leaves."
