There are also applications where poorly designed SSDs are significantly slower. This post : http://forums.slizone.com/index.php?showtopic=34943 summarizes the problem revealed by anandtech there : http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3403.

since an SSD has no moving platter, there is no difference between sequential and random read/writes.

Yes but many cheaper ssd based on MLC cells *do* have problems with random writes so that they perform, at times, worse than a conventional hard drive. If you can afford this : http://computers.pricegrabber.com/hard-drives/OCZ-Technology-OCZ-OCZSSD2-1VTX250G-250GB-SATA/m714828834.html you probably can buy this : http://computers.pricegrabber.com/hard-drives/WD-Caviar-Green-1TB-Drive/m94740806.html in the same order and put both in your computer. Interesting article on "Wired" on the subject : http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/06/boy-survives-being-struck-by-a-meteorite/
with a photo of a car hit and these numbers :

"A broad 1991 study of meteorite strikes on structures and near humans found that they are relatively common. The authors tabulated 69 strikes on human infrastructure since 1790, including 57 in the 20th century. They also counted 25 near misses of human beings."

Will this case be classified as a near miss or direct hit ?

So if I get a copy of Windows in Europe and do a full reinstall, how am I supposed to use my already-active internet connection to get Firefox?

Start
Run
Cmd
ftp
o
ftp.mozilla.org
anonymous
anonymous
cd pub/firefox/releases
dir
          (choose your version)
cd 3.0.9
cd win32
dir
          (choose your language)
cd en-US
mget * (easier than typing the full name with escapes)
close
quit
Fir[TAB] (expands to the full name of the setup file)

This helped me a lot of times when i had to repair a screwed up windows xp where IE would crash.
Other alternative is having a cd with firefox but you know about murphy's laws.

Submission + - Gaboogie Conference Service runs on Open Source (linuxpr.com)

mrtaylor writes: "The Gaboogie Mobile and Group Conference service is based on open source products: from the operating system running on the servers (CentOS) to the primary programming language (Ruby) to the actual devices doing the switching and routing (FreeSwitch)

Many of the features in Gaboogie are familiar to anyone who uses a conference calling server, but a lot of them are innovative and make the service very nice to use.
