Software Freedom Conservancy Wins GPL Case Against Westinghouse 225

fishthegeek writes "The Software Freedom Conservancy has received a judgement against Westinghouse Digital Electronics for $90,000 in damages, $50,000 in costs plus a donation of all of the offending HDTV's that were using BusyBox in violation of the GPL. Given that WDE is nearly bankrupt it's likely that most if not all of the cash will disappear in a legal 'poof,' but it is a victory regardless."
It's funny. Laugh.

Windows vs. Ubuntu — Dell's Verdict 718

Barence writes "Remember how Dell put up a website declaring Ubuntu was safer than Windows, only to later change its mind? Well, the company has gotten right back into the Windows vs. Ubuntu debate with a highly sophisticated website arguing the pros and cons of each OS. People should choose Windows, argues Dell, if: they are already using Windows, are familiar with Windows, or are new to computers. People should choose Ubuntu if they're interested in open-source programming. Brilliant."

DARPA To Turn Humans Into Batteries 183

DARPA is working on a project that will convert energy from the human body to power a variety of military gadgets. From the article: "Obviously, our bodies generate heat — thermal energy. They also produce vibrations when we move — kinetic energy. Both forms of energy can be converted into electricity. Anantha Chandrakasan, an MIT electrical engineering professor, who is working on the problem with a former student named Yogesh Ramadass, says the challenge is to harvest adequate amounts of power from the body and then efficiently direct it to the device that needs it." If I remember the movie correctly, this didn't turn out so well for the humans.

The technology, which has already sparked interest from companies such as BT and IBM, is already in its first phase and boasts an impressive 2.5 terabytes capacity, double the capacity of the London phone system.

Meh, my hard drive can store almost that much already.

You're kidding right? Obviously the writer meant that there is 2.5TB/second capacity. We are not talking about storage, we are talking about bandwidth. No one has 2.5TB/second bandwidth in use right now.

He most certainly is. But the summary does not say TB/s, just Terabytes. One would expect a "nerd news" website to watch out for this kind of mistake.

But then again, typos, dupes, slashvertisements, and daily "not news", who am I kidding...

Right on. I'm an engineer, and I don't use Twitter, but trying to make sense of things that are purely emotional is bullshit.

On a lighter note, that comment of yours has to be the most Sheldon-Cooper-esque comment on Slashdot right now.
