Observations made with ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) have revealed for the first time that a star orbiting the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way moves just as predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Its orbit is shaped like a rosette and not like an ellipse as predicted by Newton's theory of gravity. This long-sought-after result was made possible by increasingly precise measurements over nearly 30 years, which have enabled scientists to unlock the mysteries of the behemoth lurking at the heart of our galaxy.

The US power grid was the target of a first cyberattack in March. The attack caused no disruption to power generation, but short term loss of control for grid operators. "In the March episode, a flaw in the victim utility's firewalls allowed "an unauthenticated attacker" to reboot them over and over again, effectively breaking them. The firewalls served as traffic cops for data flowing between generation sites and the utility's control center, so operators lost contact with those parts of the grid each time the devices winked off and on. The glitches persisted for about 10 hours, according to NERC, and the fact that there were issues at multiple sites "raised suspicion." After an initial investigation, the utility decided to ask its firewall manufacturer to review what happened, according to NERC, which led to the discovery of "an external entity" — a hacker or hackers — interfering with the devices."

Should Lithium ion batteries in consumer devices be more closely regulated? A man in Texas was killed by an exploding vape pen. "There were more than 2,000 vape pen explosion and burn injuries in the United States from 2015 to 2017, according to a study published by Tobacco Control. A report by the U.S. Fire Administration blamed injuries and fires on the prevalence of lithium-ion batteries found in e-cigarettes. “It is this intimate contact between the body and the battery that is most responsible for the severity of the injuries that have been seen,” the report said.Link to Original Source

It was my assumption disk technology outpaced tape long ago for data archiving, but IBM has produced a world record storage milestone. Researchers have produced a tape with 201 gigabytes per square inch, or 330 TB per cartridge. Also, tape still beats disks on cost.

Volvo, like Bob Dylan in 1965 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Dylan_controversy), has made the decision to phase out conventional combustion engines in their cars and go electric. Previous models will continue to be produced, but future cars will feature electric motors or hybrid motors. From the article, "Tim Urquhart, principal analyst at IHS Automotive, said the move was a "clever sort of PR coup — it is a headline grabber". "The announcement is significant, and quite impressive, but only in a small way. The hybrids they are promising to make might be mild hybrids, anything as basic as a stop-start system."

A researcher has discovered 200 million unsecured voter records have been found in a database maintained by Deep Root Analytics (DRA). Chris Vickery, a Cyber Risk Analyst for UpGuard discovered the data, and was responsible for a similar find in 2015. From the article, "UpGuard says the records were compiled by DRA and at least two other contractors, Target Point Consulting Inc. and Data Trust. Voter information, aside from a few elements protected by law, are public record. Sometimes access to this data can be expensive, other times it's freely available. Yet, the golden rule tends to be that the information can't be used for commercial purposes."
