Comment Re:News for nerds? (Score 1) 1109

The problem is that the social media crowd only has a SMALL % of the photos/videos the feds have. Given this, the list of possible targets social media comes up with invariably extends well beyond likely, and quickly delves into the absurd, and unfortunately a select few target strictly because a person is "brown", "middle eastern", "looks like TeaParty" member.

That is why social media is more of a joke in this instance than normal. Also, why the media is a complete and utter joke because they will run ANYTHING as breaking news, and their politics shines through as well with wishes that the bomber is a home grown anti-tax day person. The desire to label the bomber as such was palpable on many news channels/shows.

There was a group of military that ran the marathon WITH backpacks on. They were also some of the first to help the wounded. exercise your inner-google. I saw photos that day of that showed them running IN the race.

Take off the tinfoil hat and rejoin reality. It may suck and make no sense at times, but every now and then, you actually get to have some fun. If you are always wearing your tinfoil hat, you will NEVER feel happiness.

So your contention is that the "real story is ISN'T nanny state"? I would disagree 100%. This is exactly what the story is about, nanny state deems turkey/cheese sandwich not healthy, but chicken nuggets are. TSA must have gotten their marching orders recently. They have been pretty strict about pushing as many people through those radiation machines as possible for that last couple of months. Prior, you could pony up to the metal detectors without much hassle. Now, you are told to stand in the long imaging line. And this is the case at several airports I travel through.

Yes, and do you know why? Absolute power corrupts absolutely. It WILL be someone's job to oversee others. Someone will be in charge of placing you where you will do the best job for the state. Those people will consolidate their power and elevate themselves above everyone else. The 1st person who calls them out, will be dealt with by force, as the person consolidating their power will threaten someone with turning their job/life into a living hell, unless they take out the usurper. Threaten or offer a much better job.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

The only way you get a "perfect" society is by removing human nature from it.

I don't see how you can look at how this has played out with Stalin starving 20+ Million "comrades", or Mao killing even more, and wish for a system that would allow such things to happen.

Some could also say that capitalism hasn't been given a chance because the unions(good up to a point) has taken way more than their fair share, the federal governments has been forcing banks into taking on bad loans, and the rise of entitlements - all of which have contributed to manufacturing jobs leaving the US, and the escalating deficit we see today.

I recently dumped the TV portion of Verizon. It was costing me around $100 a month for JUST TV, and that was with what I would consider a small setup. The misses was all for it, EXCEPT for the need for a DVR that was simple for her and my son to use. Not really for them to program, but for them to get at shows that are programmed. We live in area with TONS of channels OTA with an antenna. I ended up getting the Channel Master CM-7000PAL. That and netflix streaming, and I'm paying a fraction of what I used to, and I'm only really missing out on Pawn Stars and Storage Wars - which were both rotting my brain anyway.

I know it's not the wiz-bang solution others would recommend, but for non-tech folks, it's a pretty good alternative, provided you can get OTA channels.

In one corner, you have the studios who want 1080p content pumped out, in the most rigorous DRM fashion possible, to the unrealized monetary assets, errr customers, for an outrageously high premium. The studios who want to charge ANY content provider streaming the studio's material to pay through the nose for the right of distribution.

On the other hand, you have the telco's who want to monetize every bit on the internet, and are soon going to charge ANY content provider streaming the studio's material to pay through the nose for the right of distribution of material through the telco's internet.

Who loses in this battle? The end user, and the netflixs of the world can not maintain the same business model because they will simply end up as a set of finger cuffs as both parties give them the screw job.

Looks like I'll be buying ALL of my content in the bargain bin, and reading a crap ton of e-books.
