It's an ongoing war that started in 1967 if not earlier. Palestine wasn't even a nation back then so it couldn't formally declare war. They just ended having to fight for their stolen land back.

Hamas chooses not to follow Geneva conventions, at least partly because those conventions favor those with the most machines.

And the invasion won't solve anything. Iraq and Afghanistan are a better analogy than Germany.

So do pandemics and nuke wars. But knocking down civilization for a while isn't likely to stop it. The fall of the Roman Empire created a "dark zone" in our history, but after a roughly a thousand years we bounced back, largely because most the knowledge the Romans gained didn't go away.
