Microsoft releases countless hotfixes for bugs for Windows that aren't released through Windows Update. They maintain separate branches, one is just security fixes that you get in Windows Updates and one is cumulative bug fixes that also includes security fixes (QFE) but you have to visit the particular KB article to download (in some cases request for free). Windows Update is smart, if you download the bug fix + security fix (QFE) it knows to install a newer QFE version of the file. Service packs incorporate bugs fixes AND security fixes, and maybe native support for more hardware. A lot of people don't know they need a particular bugfix for their hardware combo. All they know is Windows crashes, "Micro$oft sux" and Steve Jobs is God and shat gold.

As the fucking summary says, libraries aren't open 24/7. Maybe they can't go to the library during the library's hours. The internet is ever important these days likely you can't even get a job without it as many employers ditch paper applications. Even when you buy something, the manufacturer just refers you to their website for information/support.

Comment The local cable company.. (Score 1) 331

The cable company wants at least $10000 to extend to my house, not even a 1/4 mile outside their coverage area. I look at the telephone poles recently down the road, and there are new strands of cable co wiring on top of already existing cable co wiring and I am sure only one cable company exists. They could have used that labor and wire to extend to my house instead. Even if I paid them the money what guarantee do I have to the viability of the signal for both internet & TV and what if a storm takes it down? Oh, and all the wasted dollars on stuff like "free wifi" from the same cable companies they could have used a fraction to expand their coverage area. Oh wait, what the fuck is all that USF money going towards????

Our options are 3G data plans, satellite and dial-up. All are shitty, at times 3G is no better than dial-up and the connection keeps getting dropped and shitty unusable speeds during the day. I try not to do any important financial or other transactions during the day as a dropped connection would be bad news. Many of these sites don't respond nicely to have to reload the page, I could be double charged or something and may have to spend time and gas with the bank to clear that up, more money out of my pocket kept from spending on goods on which our economy relies so heavily on.

Or perhaps we should treat kids like full humans and allow them to work. There are many right to work states that would love to give 10 year old children the right to work. After all we are violating their basic rights by not allowing them to work.

"Right to work" means being able to work somewhere without being required to join a union and/or pay union dues.

Or, you know, I could just continue using Windows where everything just works. I'm game to a little developing, I got 4 different MinGW toolchains for different purposes with a unix-like shell. At least I can play with those and not fuck with kernels and getting the hardware I paid good money for to work all the time and work more than just adequately.

Every time I try Linux, even recently, I spend more time trying to get everything to work than actually doing what I want to do. Wireless STILL didn't work. A driver was installed but it wouldn't find any networks. Wired LAN randomly didn't work, and for some reason was dependent upon for booting. Most of the time I end up having to compile a newer kernel to sort some things out. I could go on. Eventually I give up because I'm tired of spending my entire time trying to get things to just work.
