I think I know how this answer was given. The JWST took the first pictures of an exoplanet that allowed analysis of its atmosphere. There was a bug in the logic that tried to simplify the answer to a level suitable for a 9-year-old. Errors like this are inevitable during initial testing of such a system.

I can't find whether AR6 reduces uncertainty enough to conclude otherwise, but the consensus had been that there was still a chance that aerosols could have a net warming effect.

Submission + - EU passes a tariff based on good's CO2 (cnn.com) 1

WindBourne writes: EU is creating a tariff on imported goods based on their CO2 emissions that went into production and transportation. While many have opposed this, others have been correctly pointing out that little would change until nations started charging other nations for their polluting the world.

In some ways, this already has a number of attributes going for it. With Kyoto, Europe forced that Emissions from bio would count at the point where it was harvested, and not where it was burned/utilized. This was because Europe is a major importer of bio products for heating and electricity. With this tariff, it will apply any use of Bio, including H2, at point of usage, not of production.

What remains to be seen is:
1) how they will apply it to size ( nation? State? City? )?
2) What data will be used ( Information from the local government? Satellite? )?
3) how the data will be normalized ( GDP? Per capita? )?
4) how to calculate emissions per good ( total emissions? worst item? Certain parts? )?

This will no doubt cause a number of nations to scream about it, as well as smaller nations, but hopefully, more nations will join in as well.
Looks like the world is finally going to get serious about stopping GHG emissions.

Submission + - Commodore SX-64 Used as TOTP Authenticator 1

ewhac writes: Vintage computing enthusiast Cameron Kaiser (ClassicHasClass) has written a TOTP authenticator that runs on the Commodore 64. Kaiser explains that a C64 makes an excellent TOTP authenticator, as it is very well air-gapped, and considerably more difficult to misplace than a phone. Written in C64 BASIC (no, really) with some 6502 assembler subroutines doing the heavy lifting for SHA-1, his blog post goes in to incredible detail (with myriad citations) on its development and operation. Since the C64 kept time via power line frequency, the TOTP authenticator should remain accurate for as long as the machine stays powered up.

Submission + - Twitter offices shut down after mass resignations (marketwatch.com) 7

quonset writes: Elon Musk gave a deadline of 5 PM Thursday for Twitter employees to decide whether they want to commit to “extremely hardcore” work or else leave the company. As of Friday morning Twitter offices are shut down because so many people tendered their resignation. From the story:

The full scope of the departures wasn’t immediately clear. After the Thursday deadline passed and resignations became apparent, Twitter emailed employees saying that the company was temporarily closing its office buildings effective immediately. The offices will reopen Monday, the email said.

As the deadline approached Thursday, some employees posted farewells to the company’s internal Slack messaging platform, according to screenshots viewed by The Wall Street Journal. Some posted the “saluting face” emoji, which many employees had adopted as a symbol of the end of Twitter’s pre-Musk era following mass layoffs earlier this month.

This continues the ongong saga of Musk's attempt to take control over the company. It began with his comment (on Twitter no less) that he would be buying the company, followed by months of him trying to get out of the $44 billion arrangement.

After acceding to the purchase, he then proceeded to fire the Twitter board, half of its workforce, then promptly said Twitter may have to declare bankruptcy as more and more advertisers stopped buying ad space.

Musk then said he'd implement an $8/month fee for people to have the vaunted blue checkmark, the sign of a verified account, which instantly led to massive trolling, including in one case for Eli Lily which said it would give insulin shots away for free leading to a 5% decline in the company stock.

Musk continued his purge by firing 80% of all Twitter contractors, without notice, and firing employees who corrected him.

Stay tuned.

Submission + - Twitter locks out staff following ultimatum (bbc.com)

LeeLynx writes: From the BBC:

Twitter has told employees that the company's office buildings will be temporarily closed, effective immediately.

In a message seen by the BBC, workers were told that the offices would reopen on Monday 21 November.

It did not give a reason for the move.

The announcement comes amid reports that large numbers of staff were quitting after new owner Elon Musk called on them to sign up for "long hours at high intensity" or leave.

The message went on to say: "Please continue to comply with company policy by refraining from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere."
....
One former Twitter worker who wished to remain anonymous told the BBC: "I think when the dust clears today, there's probably going to be less than 2,000 people left."

They added that everyone in their team had been terminated.
....
Another person said they had resigned even though they had been prepared to work long hours.

"I didn't want to work for someone who threatened us over email multiple times about only 'exceptional tweeps should work here' when I was already working 60-70 hours weekly," they said.

Submission + - Fucking Beautiful! Webb space scope spots "hourglass" star nursery (webbtelescope.org)

Tablizer writes: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has revealed the once-hidden features of the protostar within the dark cloud L1527, providing insight into the beginnings of a new star. These blazing clouds within the Taurus star-forming region are only visible in infrared light, making it an ideal target for Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam).

The protostar itself is hidden from view within the “neck” of this hourglass shape. An edge-on protoplanetary disk is seen as a dark line across the middle of the neck. Light from the protostar leaks above and below this disk, illuminating cavities within the surrounding gas and dust.

The region’s most prevalent features, the clouds colored blue and orange in this representative-color infrared image, outline cavities created as material shoots away from the protostar and collides with surrounding matter. The colors themselves are due to layers of dust between Webb and the clouds. The blue areas are where the dust is thinnest. The thicker the layer of dust, the less blue light is able to escape, creating pockets of orange.

Submission + - Musk gives Twitter employees ultimatum to stay (nytimes.com) 3

smooth wombat writes: The ongoing theater of Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter continues unabated. First he fired half of all Twittter employees, then turned around and asked some of them to come back when he realized their experience was needed to keep the lights on. Musk then went on another firing spree by getting rid of 80% of contractors, without notice.

This was followed by his announcement that people would need to pay $8/month to gain the vaunted blue checkmark for account verification, which inevitably led to both outrage by users and a whole host of trolls scooping up celebrity and company names and posting as them. One of those "verified" accounts was Eli Lilly whose stock took a dive when its "verified" account said it would be offering insulin for free.

Stil further, Musk has a serious revenue problem as companies stop buying ad space on Twitter due to Musk's free speech stance which has led to a barrage of hate speech appearing which companies want nothing to do with. However, that free speech apparently does not extend to Twitter employees who corrected Musk on certain topics. Further reports indicate Musk has also fired other employees who corrected him.

Now comes word Musk has given Twitter employees until 5 PM Eastern time to decide if they want to continue working for Twitter (and by extension, him).

Mr. Musk made the announcement in an early morning email to employees on Wednesday; The New York Times obtained the message, which had the subject line “A Fork in the Road.” In the note, Mr. Musk, 51, reiterated that Twitter faced a difficult road ahead and offered employees three months of severance if they did not want to continue working there “to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0.”
...
In his note to Twitter employees on Wednesday, Mr. Musk said they would need to work hard — very hard. “In an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore,” he wrote. “This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”

Engineering would be the primary focus, Mr. Musk added, with design and product management taking a back seat. He included a link to an online form asking employees to confirm their interest in working at Twitter by 5 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.

Submission + - Facebook fact-checkers will stop checking Trump after presidential bid (cnn.com)

AmiMoJo writes: Facebook’s fact-checkers will need to stop fact-checking former President Donald Trump following the announcement that he is running for president, according to a company memo obtained by CNN.

While Trump is currently banned from Facebook, the fact-check ban applies to anything Trump says and false statements made by Trump can be posted to the platform by others. Despite Trump’s ban, “Team Trump,” a page run by Trump’s political group, is still active and has 2.3 million followers.

Tuesday’s memo from Meta underscores the challenges social media platforms face in deciding how to handle another Trump presidential campaign. The former president announced Tuesday night that he would seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, aiming to become only the second commander-in-chief ever elected to two nonconsecutive terms.

Facebook’s parent company Meta pays third-party fact-checking organizations to apply fact-check labels to misinformation across Facebook and Instagram.

If you discard the first six years and take the slope of the linear trend from 1999 to 2009 you get 3.07 mm/year.
