Submission + - Harry Potter threatens owl population in India (greenfudge.org)

An anonymous reader writes: Since the Harry Potter movies became popular in India, more and more parents have granted their kids the wish to follow in Harry Potter’s footsteps (who owns a snow owl named Hedwig) by allowing them to have their own white owl. An increasing number of people have been reported to buy owls from illegal bird and wildlife traders, who see the financial benefits of the trade but forget the importance of the wild owls for India’s fragile eco-systems.

Submission + - Zeus Attackers Turned The Tables On Researchers (darkreading.com)

ancientribe writes: The attackers behind a recent Zeus Trojan exploit that targeted quarterly federal taxpayers who file electronically also set up a trap for researchers investigating the attack as well as their competing cybercrime gangs. They fed them a phony administrative panel with fake statistics on the number of Zeus-infected machines, as well as phony "botnet" software that actually gathers intelligence on the researcher or competitor who downloads it.

Maybe these bozos should worry about making a descent game before worrying about pirating...Operation Flashpoint was way ahead of its time when it came out...Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising was the worst game I've bought in the entire past two years. Whether your games are being pirated or not is no reason to make a game that bad. Hell the pre-order price was 59.95 within two months I could buy it on Steam for $10. As far as the scheme for DLC is concerned they didn't have any. I still boot it up every now and again to see if they may have done something right but now they have even completely stopped supporting the game. Why should people purchase a half finished game from a company who has shown that instead of finishing a game and providing DLC for it they just give up and move on?

Not sure I agree with the statement that this rules out the networks online viewing.

I regularly watch Fox.com and CBS.com because I'm not at home when Bones and NCIS come on...and I still get annoyed at all the commercials. The have a commercial every 5 to 10 minutes just like when watching on network tv.

Revisiting the "Holy Trinity" of MMORPG Classes 362

A feature at Gamasutra examines one of the foundations of many MMORPGs — the idea that class roles within such a game fall into three basic categories: tank, healer, and damage dealer. The article evaluates the pros and cons of such an arrangement and takes a look at some alternatives. "Eliminating specialized roles means that we do away with boxing a class into a single role. Without Tanks, each class would have features that would help them participate in and survive many different encounters like heavy armor, strong avoidance, or some class or magical abilities that allow them to disengage from direct combat. Without specialized DPS, all classes should be able to do damage in order to defeat enemies. Some classes might specialize in damage type, like area of effect (AoE) damage; others might be able to exploit enemy weaknesses, and some might just be good at swinging a sharpened bit of metal in the right direction at a rapid rate. This design isn't just about having each class able to fill any trinity role. MMO combat would feel more dynamic in this system. Every player would have to react to combat events and defend against attacks."

I don't think that would work....what I would expect to see if they actually try to do this would be costing me more than buying the game. I play a game til I beat it...yes if i beat it in 2 days like I did Gods of War then it would be worth paying limited use fee (renting). On the other hand I still haven't gotten around to finishing FFX which I've owned for 2 years. In that case I would have come out cheaper buying the game out right.

Yeah I agree to a certain extent. Speaking as an owner and avid player of Vegas 2 it is worth the money and highly enjoyable if you have friends and want to play Terrorist hunt or Versus.

I have the same issues with these companies not putting out a descent demo anymore. I usually wait til someone puts a torrent up and then I try it...if I like it I go buy it, if not then it gets deleted...what I had to do with Vegas 2 and with NFS Undercover.
