And not so far from Sweden, baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) have unilimited 50,100 and even 200Mbps for a cool $40. These countries are not even the richest but somewhat think that this is an investment for their future as they can create a new type of industry with all that bandwith avaliable, helping their economies.

PokerStars is in Isle of Man. They have strictly rules regarding online gambling including coding audit, datacenter servers locked and monitored (can't get in without warning) and the need to have legal reps in the Island for avalible all time. Of course, they also set a number of rules about how the code behind should work. They also heavly tax them. The real problem here is that Las Vegas is upset with online gambling and they are trying to find an excuse. For more info: http://www.gov.im/gambling/

We are having a huge problem of lack of engineers here in Brazil. People are leaving universities already hired even if you have zero experience. If you want a good life outside the financial market you should consider move to another country.
Brazil has some bureaucracy to get residence permission to work here but I am sure you will get a good salary and a nice quality of life. And yes, people here care more about engineers, medical doctors (one exception would be famous soccer players).
This is just an expample. I don't know the situation of India, China and others. But an experienced engineer here can get about US120k a year but you are going to pay half of the price for food and house and other things. Cars is an exception, it is more expensive than america and internet connection i pay about US$50 for 30Mbps FTTH connection.
This is just an example, there are more need for example in Africa. One of my friends a few years ago saved some money and decided to try bulding some houses in Angola. He opened a company with only him as an engineer and hired local people to build. He's fucking rich now and offered me to work there for US250k a year. If I wasn't coward because Angola had a civil war 10 years ago I would probably go. You can make huge savings for your retirement in places you probably never considered going. Take a time and look for the oportunities.

Submission + - Dominos Pizza website hacked, customer data leaked

An anonymous reader writes: Dominos Pizza has been in India for more than a decade now and with much enthusiasm it decided to tap into the rapidly growing internet population by launching its online ordering system late last year. Recently a hacker managed to get away with a lot of customer data by hacking into their server. Though the company is tight lipped on the extend of the damage in an apologetic letter to its customers it says that customer email id's mobile phone numbers and delivery addresses have been compromised.

Submission + - Migrating animals might decrease bird flu spread (scientificamerican.com)

masterwit writes: I found this quite an interesting take on another role of migration and the complexity of our planet. From the article:

"Birds that migrate across continents tend to have a higher viral load than those that stay at home year round. But for some of those species, migrating might help to avoid the more virulent pathogens that can accumulate in one environment. Other animals might use this migratory escape method as well."

This is all fine and well... but considering human impact on the environment: "Better understanding these disease dynamics will be important in stemming potential pandemics. But migrations, like the animals themselves, are moving targets, influenced by human impacts to the physical and climatic landscape. With less available land and more impediments to movement—such as fragmented habitat—more animals might end up in a few close-quarters stopovers like Delaware Bay or curtail their migration, leading to fewer opportunities to escape local infection or leave the sick behind."

This is a good article with a decent bit of embedded links imo. Check it out I found it a good read.

Submission + - Why Eric Schmidt left as CEO of Google? China (newyorker.com)

Edsj writes: It seems Eric Schmidt didn't like the decision to deliver uncensored searches in China. It is reported the decision to withdraw censored searches in China was made by co-founder Larry Page sided with his founding partner, Sergey Brin and probably an internal battle for power begun. Schmidt also wasn't happy with the “don’t be evil” policy, something the Google founders were prepared to protect anytime. Schmidt lost some energy and focus after losing the China internal battle and decided to leave the position of CEO. It is also reported that the chairman position is a temporary one until he finds another business to take care.
