An anonymous reader writes: A recent study conducted by a university in the United Kingdom found that individuals who fully complied with COVID-19 measures are more likely to suffer from lingering mental health issues than those who resisted government mandates and viewed such orders with skepticism.

The findings might be the least surprising bit of post-pandemic data out there.

But they are nonetheless hard data for individuals who desired to make their own health choices during the madness of the pandemic era and were vilified for doing so.

Meanwhile, that person you might still see today wearing a mask in public — four years after the outbreak began — could need help, according to a study sanctioned by Bangor University in Wales.

wired_parrot writes: According to a Consumer Reports reliability survey, data shows that EVs have 79% greater reliability problems than gas cars. Plug-in hyrbrids fare even worse with 146% more problems, but regular hybrid vehicles showed promise with 26% fewer problems.

The problem is that while electric vehicles have fewer potential problem areas than gas vehicles, their battery and electric powertrain systems are still in their infancy with manufacturers working out the kinks. Plug-in hybrids fare the worst by combining the worst of both worlds. The results may seem to be discouraging for EV evangelist, but CR does see movement in the right direction. But for now they discourage buying new model year EVs.

AmiMoJo writes: Last month, we got our first true taste of the much-awaited Loongson 3A6000 CPU which is a brand new chip designed to serve China's PC market. In terms of specifications, the Loongson 3A6000 CPU features a quad-core design (4C/8T) and an operating frequency of 2.5 GHz (peak). The CPU uses a 4th Generation Dragon architecture which integrates LA664 cores with support for 128-bit vector processing extended instructions (LSX) and the 256-bit advanced vector processing extended instructions (LASX) along with SMT2.

The performance of the chip was measured within SPEC CPU 2006 and UnixBench benchmarks. Starting with SPEC CPU 2006, we first have the single-core tests where the Loongson 3A6000 CPU offered up to 75% performance uplift over its predecessor, the 3A5000. The chip also ended up very close to the Core i3-10100 while consuming lower power (42W vs 52W). The difference is that the Loongson 3A6000 CPU was running at a clock speed of 2.5 GHz whereas the Core i3-10100 peaked at 4.3 GHz. In multi-core tests, the chip once again showed almost 2x the performance uplift over the 3A5000 predecessor while offering nearly similar performance as the Core i3-10100 (4.3 GHz).

So to make things fair, the Loongson 3A6000 was pitted against the Core i3-10100 and Core i5-14600K at the same 2.5 GHz clock speeds. This allowed the 3A600 to easily surpass the Core i3-10100 CPU with a lead of up to 40% while the chip was also faster than the Core i5-14600K in the integer tests while falling slightly behind in the Floating Point tests.

  • OpenSSH version 9.5p1
  • OpenSSL version 3.0.12, a major upgrade from OpenSSL 1.1.1t in FreeBSD 13.2-RELEASE
  • OpenZFS release 2.2
  • The bhyve hypervisor now supports TPM and GPU passthrough.

This version will now create user home directories in /home by default, instead of the traditional /usr/home.

Although it’s not a class leader in any of the most important aspects of a pickup, it is still a pretty competitive model, due to its straightforward design and great practicality on a daily basis. Now, it looks like the Japanese manufacturer is preparing a novelty that could make this pickup even more appealing. Namely, it looks like the 2024 Nissan Frontier Hybrid is on the way, even though the officials are still quiet.

If this happens, the Frontier would get the opportunity to play on the efficiency card. At the same time, it would keep the same level of practicality and everyday usability. Other than the powertrain, we don’t believe this truck could be much different compared to the gas-only model. According to rumors, the new powertrain could be introduced already in the next year.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson admitted that he and his son monitored each other’s porn intake in a resurfaced clip from 2022.

During a conversation on the “War on Technology” at Benton, Louisiana’s Cypress Baptist Church — unearthed by X user Receipt Maven last week — the Louisiana representative talked about how he installed “accountability software” called Covenant Eyes on his devices in order to abstain from internet porn and other unsavory websites.

“It scans all the activity on your phone, or your devices, your laptop, what have you; we do all of it,” Johnson told the panel about the app.

“It sends a report to your accountability partner. My accountability partner right now is Jack, my son. He’s 17. So he and I get a report about all the things that are on our phones, all of our devices, once a week. If anything objectionable comes up, your accountability partner gets an immediate notice. I’m proud to tell ya, my son has got a clean slate.”

Outside of the creepy Big Brother-ness of it all, Receipt Maven also aired concerns about whether Covenant Eyes — which is still a working subscription-based service — might “compromise” Johnson’s devices, if he’s still actively seeking accountability.

“A US Congressman is allowing a 3rd Party tech company to scan ALL of his electronic devices daily and then uploading reports to his son about what he’s watching or not watching.,” Receipt Maven wrote. “I mean, who else is accessing that data?”

Domestic cats and European wildcats (a species to which the Scottish wildcat belongs) shared Europe for more than 2000 years without interbreeding, according to a new study. But around 70 years ago, something changed.

In the mid-1950s, more than 5% of the genetic markers in Scottish wildcats began to resemble those of domestic cats, according to a second new study. After 1997, that figure jumped to as high as 74%. In the wild, the markings of the Scottish wildcat became muddled and spotted, its short, bushy tail replaced by the long, thin tail of domestic cats. Today, the genome of the Scottish wildcat is so “swamped” with domestic cat DNA that the animal is “genomically extinct,” the authors conclude. All that’s left in nature is a “hybrid swarm,” they write, a confused mix of wild and domestic DNA. “Everything these wildcats have evolved over thousands of years is being lost in a few generations,” says the study’s lead author, Jo Howard-McCombe, a conservation geneticist at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.

The reason appears to be a shrinking wildcat population in Scotland—the last stronghold of the European wildcat in Britain—and human encroachment, both of which forced the wildcats to breed with domestic cats. The only hope may lie in a captive population of Scottish wildcats, which researchers have begun releasing into the wild, far from domestic felines. The team hopes that as the animals adapt to their environment over several generations, they’ll begin to shed their domestic DNA. It may be an uphill battle, but the project’s lead, Helen Senn, says, “We’ve got to start somewhere.”

samleecole writes: The ever-escalating game of cat-and-mouse between YouTube, ad blockers, and users has reached a point where it can no longer be ignored, with YouTube making it impossible for some users with adblockers installed to watch videos, and adblock developers and their users constantly updating their tactics to continue blocking ads on YouTube.

Over the last few months, people using ad blockers have been getting these popups from YouTube that say ads are not allowed on YouTube, that they violate YouTube's terms of use, and encouraging them to sign up for Premium.

“The use of ad blockers violate YouTube’s Terms of Service. We’ve launched a global effort to urge viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience,” a YouTube spokesperson told 404 Media. “Ads support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube. We will of course cooperate fully with any questions or queries from the DPC.”

Meanwhile, every major adblocker and its user base has started to talk almost exclusively about YouTube’s escalations, and have been working on mitigations to stay one step ahead. The ad block saga has also become the main topic of conversation on the YouTube subreddit and a popular topic on YouTube itself. The uBlock Origin team has been updating a “filter” that evades detection from YouTube and posting mega threads about the situation on its subreddit every couple days, the latest of which notes that “YouTube changes their detection scripts twice a day, which means that even if you got a filter update earlier today, another one might be required soon. There’s no way around this if you want to remain logged in.”

Though China does possess an advantage in key components like raw materials, processing and battery manufacturing, a key Porsche figurehead noticed something very different that Chinese manufacturers have, that other, more established companies like Porsche do not.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Porsche chief designer Michael Mauer said that Chinese car companies have an advantage because the strict guidelines that more-established brands use to protect their “heritage” limit the creativity of their designers, but also help to inspire new ideas.

"These startups, with no heritage, they can do things completely different," Mauer told Bloomberg. "I consider it a positive thing actually, as a designer, because that makes the decision-makers — I.E., the management board — more open-minded."
