There exist proven designs to produce nuclear energy with non-critical reactor mass i.e. these plants cannot experience a runaway core melt and are considered inherently safe.

As a bonus they can reuse spent nuclear fuel and transmute it into far less problematic nuclear waste (with dramatically shorter halftimes).

We still don't really have a good theory of mind. And IMHO the most interesting aspect of AGI research is that it finally will allow us to approach this question with actual experiments rather than just philosophy.

They represent a vast repository of canned knowledge that can be easily tapped. This is what I meant when calling them stepping stones.

My intention was not to imply that AGI will in any way resemble LLMs. Rather LLMs will be used in training more advances AGI models.

Nope . Not if you've been involved in this space. I was impressed the first time I saw a LLM being able to process a news article and correctly answer questions about it about five years ago. If anything I am surprised it took so long to get to where we are now.

Then again I shouldn't have been. After all, I saw Mercedes-Benz demoing an artificial neural net based autopilot in the nineties (highway only). Never left their research labs back then.

LLMs are inherently limited by what they can do based on their architecture. They are a great stepping stone towards true AGI, and I have a pretty good idea what will be needed to get there, but IMHO it's absurd to be afraid of the current crop of models.

The current models have no agency. They are still feed forward models. They only react to prompts.

There's no inner life, no independent conception of new ideas, no ego.
