It's the nature of the beast when dealing with LOX tanks. 1st)It would be wise to let the tank sit with a pressurized with a couple of psi of O2 for several weeks building up a thicker ceramic AlO2 layer. 2nd) implement a staged cool down procedure before filling tank with cryonic oxygen to reduce stress on welds..

Submission + - Saving billions of male chicks from a horrible death (acs.org)

JMarshall writes: For chickens bred to lay eggs, being male is a death sentence. Male chicks are usually culled within days of hatching by methods including gassing and grinding. A new method uses Raman spectroscopy to sex the embryos while still in the egg, allowing the male embryos to be culled before they are sensitive to pain. The researchers cut a hole in the end of the egg with a laser, shine light on the blood vessels exposed within the egg, and collect a Raman spectrum. Male and female blood have different spectra thanks to differences in sugar and protein profiles and in the amount of DNA in the blood. Then the researchers tape the end of the egg closed and allow embryo development to continue.

There's more work to be done before the approach can be used industrially, but with strong demand for an ethical alternative to chick culling, a major German producer of egg-laying hens is partnering with the researchers to build a larger scale prototype for testing.

Submission + - One of Europe's Biggest Companies Loses €40 Million in Online Scam (softpedia.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Leoni AG, Europe's biggest manufacturer of wires and electrical cables and the fourth-largest vendor in the world, announced it lost €40 million ($44.6 million) following an online scam that tricked one of its financial officers into transferring funds to the wrong bank account.

A subsequent investigation revealed that attackers had scouted the company's network, procedures, and identified a weak spot to attack. According to authorities, a young woman working as CFO at Leoni's Bistrita factory in Romania was the target of the scam, when she received an email spoofed to look like it came from one of the company's top German executives, asking her to transfer funds to a bank account. According to unconfirmed information, the money stolen from Leoni's Bistrita branch ended up in bank accounts in the Czech Republic.

According to the FBI, this type of attack is known as CEO fraud, whaling, or BEC (Business Email Compromise), and has defrauded companies around the world of over $3 billion since October 2013.

Submission + - Michigan court rules against civil forfeiture

schwit1 writes: The Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled that civil forfeiture denies citizens their due process rights under the Constitution. As the court wrote:

“Because of her indigency and inability to pay the required bond, [Kinnon] was excluded ‘from the only forum effectively empowered to settle [her] dispute.’ Ultimately, Michigan’s civil asset forfeiture scheme operated to deprive [Kinnon] of a significant property interest without according her the opportunity for a hearing, contrary to the requirements of the Due Process Clause.”

This shouldn’t be rocket science, as the language and intent of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution is quite plain.

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

The problem today is that this has become rocket science. Too many people either don’t know this plain language, or work dishonestly to distort it to empower government to oppress us.

Submission + - SPAM: Holy Grail of energy policy in sight as battery technology smashes the old order 3

mdsolar writes: The world's next energy revolution is probably no more than five or ten years away. Cutting-edge research into cheap and clean forms of electricity storage is moving so fast that we may never again need to build 20th Century power plants in this country, let alone a nuclear white elephant such as Hinkley Point.

The US Energy Department is funding 75 projects developing electricity storage, mobilizing teams of scientists at Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and the elite Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge labs in a bid for what it calls the 'Holy Grail' of energy policy.

You can track what they are doing at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). There are plans for hydrogen bromide, or zinc-air batteries, or storage in molten glass, or next-generation flywheels, many claiming "drastic improvements" that can slash storage costs by 80pc to 90pc and reach the magical figure of $100 per kilowatt hour in relatively short order.

“Storage is a huge deal,” says Ernest Moniz, the US Energy Secretary and himself a nuclear physicist. He is now confident that the US grid and power system will be completely "decarbonised" by the middle of the century.

Learning of the federal action, the company immediately removed its Russian availability and announced that it would no longer be operating in the region.
