Comment Re: Plex Server Phone Home (Score 1) 34

I run a plex media server in my house for all of my media. It works great. I have an HDHomerun tuner hooked up to it and can watch & DVR local broadcasts from anywhere even when I travel for work. As far as I know, the only thing it needs to connect to Plexâ(TM)s infrastructure for is media sharing with other users, which I donâ(TM)t do. It would appear a lot of folks have set up plex media servers in hetzner data centers and sold access to other plex users. You still have to authenticate with plex to access shared libraries so thatâ(TM)s the connection.

What halfway decent dev team doesnâ(TM)t set up a lab environment? Oh, lookâ¦an old VMWare server thatâ(TM)s gone out of serviceâ¦pop it onto a separate VLAN (or even better, a physically separate LAN) with limited access to the internet, etc.

Download and play all you want in your isolated sandbox. But your corporate laptop is locked down.

I'm fairly certain the issues we have with it are because of the TV (which is a Vizio) implementation. I also have a TCL smart TV with Roku built-in and it works like a champ. And I use a Roku device plugged into my primary TV which is a "dumb" TV thankfully. I have an older Fire TV Stick that still works but is showing its age. I actually quite liked it when we first got it, but the Prime Video app for every other platform sucks balls.

We have a "Smart" TV with chromecast built-in. WHEN it works, it works similar to a Roku. But, by god, it almost never works. I've used just about every media player option that's existed (excepting Apple TV) from MythTV to the original XBMC to Kodi and distros like GeexBox and OpenELEC, and Roku, Fire TV, etc. and Chromecast has been BY FAR the worst experience. Now maybe that's because it's the Smart TV implementation instead of a standalone chromecast device. I don't know.

By the way, I keep up with Disney theme park news and I'm not hearing reports of the exact same Rise Of The Resistance ride constantly breaking down in Orlando.

This was my first thought, too. I've never been to Disneyland in CA, but have been to Disney World in Orlando many times. The last few times, I was able to ride RoR each time, didn't have insane waits either time, and can only remember it breaking down once in the last several times I've been there...which was right after it opened. I wonder what the difference is.

I use DDG almost exclusively for internet searches. Except for the 2% - 5% of the time that I get shit results and have to go to google for accurate ones. Now at least I know why. Frankly, I am amazed it's as good as it is. Every time I try Bing I get worse results than DDG somehow. The other day I was having an issue with something specific to Microsoft (don't remember if it was an Azure or M365 issue but something Microsoft cloud-ish) and searched on Bing...where I got shit results. Same search on google and what I was looking for came up in the top 5 results. Bing literally couldn't give me good results for MICROSOFT'S OWN STUFF. But Google was like, oh yeah, here ya go... Make that make sense.
