Submission + - Most Android tablets fail at GPL compliance (networkworld.com)

polar_bear` writes: Red Hat's Matthew Garrett has been checking to see who's naughty and nice. Most Android tablet vendors? Naughty, naughty, naughty, when it comes to GPL compliance. The current crop of Android tablets fails miserably when it comes to GPL compliance, with most of the vendors flouting the GPL and failing to ship source.

Submission + - Do We Really Need a Cloud OS? (techtarget.com)

rsmiller510 writes: Even if Google figures out how to build a working OS, do we really want to operate in Google's world 24/7? In fact, can't we get the advantages of the cloud without using an operating system that ties us to it?

Submission + - Why Time Got It Wrong (internetevolution.com)

rsmiller510 writes: Time Magazine whiffed big time with its choice of Mark Zuckerberg for its 2010 Person of the Year. Zuckerberg shouldn't have even been on the list as far as I'm concerned. As for who was the clear Person of the Year. No contest. It was WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Submission + - WikiLeaks Shut Down is Lesson for Cloud Buyers (techtarget.com)

rsmiller510 writes: When Amazon Web Services decided to arbitrarily shut down WikiLeaks recently, it sent a chill through every cloud customer, but instead of running scared, use it as a teachable moment to understand every word of your Terms of Service.

Submission + - Five Low-Cost Windows Video Editing Programs (devx.com)

Roblimo writes: Every year, an increasing percentage of my income comes from video shooting and editing. I also help friends, neighbors, and various business associates learn to shoot and edit their own videos. This article describes my five favorite entry-level Windows video editing programs, with a brief run-down of each one's strengths and weaknesses. While I wrote this for people doing business-type videos, this information is also valuable if you want to edit your family's holiday videos. (Free registration required to view.)

Submission + - Google Search Rankings Questioned (internetevolution.com)

rsmiller510 writes: Is Google is favoring its own content over others? Given its total dominance in Web search, that would seem to constitute unfair business practice. Is Google a content company or a search engine? Time to decide.

Submission + - Data is the Next Cloud Frontier (techtarget.com)

rsmiller510 writes: Data in the cloud came together last week in a big way with Salesforce.com announcing Database.com and the purchase of cloud-based Ruby development platform Heroku, while cloud data vendor Factual got a huge influx of venture capital. Both moves were squarely aimed at Oracle. IT Pros need to pay attention to cloud trends like this or risk getting left in the dust by lean startups with low overhead.

Submission + - Will Cheap 3D Fab Start a Innovation Renaissance? (oreilly.com)

blackbearnh writes: An article over on O'Reilly Radar makes the argument that, just as inexpensive or free software development environments has led to a cornucopia of amazing web and mobile applications, the plummeting cost of 3D fabrication equipment could usher in myriad new physical inventions. The article was prompted by a new Kickstarter project, which if funded, will attempt to produce a DIY CNC milling system for under $400. TFA: "We're already seeing the cool things that people have started doing with 3D fab at the higher-entry-level cost. Many of them are ending up on Kickstarter themselves, such as an iPhone 4 camera mount that was first prototyped using a 3D printer. Now I'm dying to see what we'll get when anyone can create the ideas stuck in their heads."

Submission + - Google Plans "Searchless" Search (internetevolution.com)

rsmiller510 writes: Google has a vision for the future of search where instead of explicitly entering keywords, Google serves you results automatically based on what it "knows" about you and where you are in the world at any given moment. Creepy, fascinating or both?

Submission + - Arch: A Linux For Fundamentalists (itworld.com) 1

itwbennett writes: We all know that Ubuntu or Mint are good Linux beginners. But if you're more of a "change your own oil" type, but still not a "rebuild an engine" type, then Arch Linux is worth looking at, says Steven Vaughan-Nichols in a review. 'You see, Arch Linux, without requiring you to master kernel compiling 101 gives you an enormous amount of control over how Linux will run for you. That starts from the get-go,' says Vaughan-Nichols. One interesting thing to note: 'Arch's GRand Unified Bootloader (GRUB), doesn't automatically detect any other operating systems on your hard drive. Yes, I know Arch is all about "do-it-yourself" Linux, but GRUB is infamous for being a pain to set up properly and there's nothing quite like not being able to boot at all from a hard drive to make you want to tear your hair out.'

Submission + - Beating censorship by routing around DNS (itworld.com)

jfruhlinger writes: Last month, the US gov't shut down a number of sites it claimed were infringing copyright. They did it by ordering VeriSign to change the sites' authoritative domain name servers. This revealed that DNS is subject to government interference — and now a number of projects have emerged to bypass DNS entirely.

Submission + - Dreamforce reinforces cloud vision (techtarget.com)

rsmiller510 writes: Seems appropriate to be launching a new cloud computing blog the same week Salesforce.com is holding its Dreamforce conference because it pioneered enterprise cloud computing more than 10 years ago.
