Journal Journal: Israel Prisoner X? 5

I had never heard of this anyone got any info?
http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2013/s3686243.htm
"There would be one more blip of information that would sneak out. Prisoner X - held in a video-monitored, regularly checked, suicide proof cell - had killed himself.

Who was Prisoner X and what had he done to end up secretly jailed in a high-tech cell and locked down under a nationwide media ban?

Now, for the first time, some answers."

So anyway I will be recording the program in case anyone cares and can't access it themselves.

PJK - Paul Keating former prime minister of Australia quite gifted with words, is a master of insults. So anyway even though PJK is still with this, someone has ripped his style into iOS app so you can call the gum on your shoe better for your gait than a senator.

Journal Journal: A Monopoly on Monopoly 1

Apparently being a patent asshole isn't a new thing at all, nor twisting an innovative product to mercantile uses.

www.harpers.org/blog/2012/10/monopoly-is-theft/?single=1&src=longreads

The gameâ(TM)s true origins, however, go unmentioned in the official literature. Three decades before Darrowâ(TM)s patent, in 1903, a Maryland actress named Lizzie Magie created a proto-Monopoly as a tool for teaching the philosophy of Henry George, a nineteenth-century writer who had popularized the notion that no single person could claim to âoeownâ land. In his book Progress and Poverty (1879), George called private land ownership an âoeerroneous and destructive principleâ and argued that land should be held in common, with members of society acting collectively as âoethe general landlord.â

"The players could, however, vote to do something not officially allowed in Monopoly: cooperate. Under this alternative rule set, they would pay land rent not to a propertyâ(TM)s title holder but into a common potâ"the rent effectively socialized so that, as Magie later wrote, âoeProsperity is achieved.â

For close to thirty years after Magie fashioned her first board on an old piece of pressed wood, The Landlordâ(TM)s Game was played in various forms and under different namesâ"âoeMonopoly,â âoeFinance,â âoeAuction.â It was especially popular among Quaker communities in Atlantic City and Philadelphia, as well as among economics professors and university students whoâ(TM)d taken an interest in socialism. Shared freely as an invention in the public domain, as much a part of the cultural commons as chess or checkers, The Landlordâ(TM)s Game was, in effect, the property of anyone who learned how to play it."

http://davidbrin.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/how-democrats-and-republicans-wage-war.html
"Offered one day preceding the final Presidential debate, on foreign policy, in order to give you all some badly-needed perspective on the most important foreign policy matter of all... when and how to fight.

Last year finally saw the end of America's second-longest war. Dragging on a decade, that was the multi-trillion dollar quagmire of attrition and so-called "nation-building" in Iraq.

Our longest war, the continuing multi-trillion dollar, "nation-building" quagmire in Afghanistan, continues on and on"

I haven't finished reading it.

Undoubtedly many people may have differences of opinion on this.

Journal Journal: Revealed: US flew spy drone missions from Australia 7

Perhaps from the "No shit Sherlock dept".
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-09-03/revealed-us-flew-drone-missions-from-australia/4236306
'The United States flew highly classified Global Hawk spy drone missions from the Royal Australian Air Force base at Edinburgh in South Australia from late 2001 until at least 2006.

The operations were detected by a group of Adelaide aviation historians who had a member monitoring aircraft radio frequencies 20 hours a day. ...
While the Australian public and the South Australian Government were left in the dark, there were no restrictions on the international media.

In February 2006, an American journalist from industry publication Aviation Week and Space Technology was given access to report on a single Global Hawk reconnaissance mission from RAAF Edinburgh to southern Japan and back again. ...
Mr Aid says the US and Australia share much of the highly sensitive signals intelligence gathered by assets such as Global Hawk.

"Australia is a member of the so-called Five Eyes intelligence club that also includes the US, the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand," he said. ...
"The reality is that the Global Hawk system has proven not to be less expensive to operate than the U2," General Norton Schwartz said in January. ...
Tomorrow night on ABC1, Foreign Correspondent sounds the alarm on the swarms of private and government drones gathering in American skies and surely bound for the rest of the world.

Some of the drones have live streaming cameras and the ability to carry other payloads, and tens of thousands of them are expected to take to the sky.

But who's at the controls? Potentially anybody."

Wayne Swan Deputy PM and currently acting leader while Julia is on holidays, continues his attack on what he sees as looming inequality and social distortion. How far would he get in USA arguing for higher taxes and more spending on the disadvantaged?
Sorry to criticise the USA but I think your politics and economy is pretty screwed up and I don't see how you are going to get out of it.
Of course given the governments current polling it could just be a Hail Mary pass, but they have been acting like they care (goodle Australia NDIS)

"Or from My Hometown on the Born in the USA album:

Now main street's whitewashed windows and vacant stores

Seems like there ain't nobody wants to come down here no more

They're closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks

Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they ain't coming back to

        Your hometownâ¦

And how about this, from the song Badlands on the Darkness on the Edge of Town album:

        Poor man wanna be rich

        Rich man wanna be king

        And a king ain't satisfied

        Till he rules everything.

When I listened again to that song recently it struck me that Springsteen could have been talking expressly about a few people that I've written about lately. Since my controversial essay was published in The Monthly in March I've been asked often whether I now regret having criticised some of Australia's wealthiest and most outspoken mining tycoons.

My answer is simple: no, I don't regret a word of it. Not for a second. In fact, my only regret is not going in hard enough, because every criticism I made has been played out almost to the letter on our national stage.

You will recall my original charge: that the rising influence of vested interests is threatening Australia's egalitarian social contract. I argued that a handful of powerful people not only think they have the right to a disproportionate share of the nation's economic success, they think they have the right to manipulate our democracy and our national conversation to gain an even bigger slice of the pie."

www.smh.com.au/opinion/political-news/super-warrants-proposed-as-expansion-of-security-powers-20120503-1y1v5.html
"The Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon, will ask the parliamentary joint committee on intelligence and security to consider reforms through public hearings. Included in reforms the government is pursuing is to ''streamline'' ASIO's warrants, allowing them to be varied by the Attorney-General, making renewing of warrants easier and extending the duration of search warrants from 90 days to six months. ...

The committee is also charged with considering creating a single warrant with multiple telecommunications intercept powers for phones and computers among others, and creating a single warrant for a person covering multiple existing powers, removing the need for separate warrants against a single target.

The number of agencies allowed to lawfully access communications would be reduced under the government's proposals but simplifying information sharing between groups will be pushed.

Ms Roxon said lawful access to telecommunications would be reviewed to ensure investigative tools were not lost as telco providers changed business practices and began to delete data more regularly.

The government wants feedback on making it an offence to fail to help in data decryption and legislating telecommunication companies to keep data for up to two years"

"An authorised intelligence operations scheme for ASIO officers will be examined, under which agents are afforded the same protection from criminal and civil liability that Australian Federal Police receive. The committee will also consult on measures to address security risks posed to the telecommunications sector and whether the government needs to institute obligations on the industry to protect their networks from unauthorised interference.

The review comes as visiting US Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano last night announced agreements between Washington and Canberra firming co-operation in tackling transnational crime and terrorism. They cover improvements to information sharing across a range of areas including terrorism, transnational crime, terrorism, violent extremism and trade."
