Comment Re:For those who wonder what Gnome Shell is ... (Score 1) 514

My main complaint about Ubuntu is the way they keep dumbing down the GUI with every release (things started to go steeply downhill with Karmic).

Maybe they should make another 'buntu variant (Probuntu? Powerbuntu?) with a Gnome-based GUI less oriented at totally helpless noobs. The more geek-oriented 'buntu could also come with a more geek-oriented selection of packages installed out of the box. Mainline Ubuntu would then be free to cater to the n00borns with the Unity UI - this is a good thing now because Ubuntu can be super-duper-thinking-hurts-simple for noobs, and "powerbuntu" is available for the power users. Now both groups of users could get what they want, no need to compromise.

No dear Sir, they won't make a probuntu just for you. go grab debian and put gnome on it. there are options out there with gnome for you. i stopped using ubuntu for performance reasons i run e17 on debian. not as slick as ubuntu but it meets my performance needs well. the pro guys should leave ubuntu alone. they are doing a great job of dumbing things down for newbies. that's commendable. If you still love pain and getting dirty with the command line. there are a whole plethora of options out there - Arch, Debian, etc.

hmm. keyword:"most of the time" - I for one wouldn't like something like my brakes to work "most of the time" Just thought i'd chip that in. while i'm a huge fan of android. I think we have to grow up from the geeky mentality and deliver solutions that are excellent, stable and consistent. People want stuff that works. period.

Heck, their biggest competitor in their fastest-growing market is basing their entire web experience on Apple's browser engine, so it doesn't seem like Apple is too worried about competition there.

Let's not forget webkit's roots - KHTML - which they took and improved upon. Let's not be too cheeky in calling it Apple's browser engine. The opensource licence requires them to use, improve and release the source so others can do the same. many unsung heroes/companies have been doing that for ages. The fact that Apple did it to the original KHTML source doesn't doesn't make the derived product their own. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Comment Video calls on a mobile? (Score 1) 1184

you can do video to video calls using fring [fring.com] app on a humble Nokia E71, or a phone that has a front facing camera. I do salute them on their ability to hype 'NEW' features. interestingly the first time i used that app was two days ago, when i called my girlfriend on her iPhone 3GS. she could see me but i couldn't see her cos she didn't have frontfacing cam. I think everyone should learn about marketing, it really brings in the money!
