VDOM WAFS were built for sites that needed streaming/dynamic content - client-side pub/sub systems that update the DOM dynamically basically. They're trying to make HTML browsers look and act like native apps where lots of dynamic data is concerned. I see a lot of mostly static web sites trying to be single page apps when there's absolutely zero reason to do so. We older folks are always like "hrrrr, what problem are we trying to solve here??" and the answer is pretty much we already decided to use it because all the forums says it's the most popular, and we have to keep up with the times because Bookface and Twitchat and the Goorgles all use it. Plus it supports server-side rendering so don't worry about it you old fart - but you have to run node.js on the backend to do that.. so good luck all you Java/C++/C developers and computer science nerds. Oh BTW it's single threaded but don't worry its faster and scalier than anything.

It's kinda obvious - the crypto-guys know that the country's national currency is in trouble, so they see an opportunity to push their own coin as an alternative. The Nigerian currency devalues at an even faster rate as a side effect. The Nigerian government already banned currency exchange, now these US-based finance guys come in and provide a workaround that make currency exchange unnecessary. The government can't control crypto exchange, so it has to go after the people promoting it. Crypto currencies are a real problem in developing countries where inflationary and deflationary pressures from outside are already hard to control.
They're in jail so they can make them make a deal that lets the government get some control over deflation, whatever that might be. It's not like the government can just spend a bunch of money it doesn't have to promote its own rapidly devaluing currency.

Comment American meat is shrinking (Score 1) 428

The US has something like 28 million beef cattle, 9 million milk cows. South America has 360 million or more. So orders of magnitude more.
US ranchers are trying to protect their businesses - not surprising in a capitalist system where you can be 'too big to fail' only if you have the political clout. Ranchers have a lot of local political clout just as they always have. They used to supply horses and beef to the US army, and by doing so had lots of friends in government.
Legislation should be in place to provide consumers with the correct labeling, just in case they care what they're eating.
If a meat product is 25% wheat gluten, I want to know that before I buy it without having to put on reading glasses, fold over the label and read the finely printed ingredients list. Put it on the front of the package, and don't call it "beef" or "meat" or "bacon".

Comment Wring out the interview coaches (Score 1) 163

Some of the candidates we look at are sitting there on zoom with a interview coach in one ear telling them the answers, or sending them answers by remote desktop. It's fascinating until you've seen it a few times.
There was another guy who actually got hired right out of university. I got the feeling he didn't know a damn thing about anything, and his girlfriend was doing his work for him. Must have been some sort of arranged relationship because he was gross, never washed or changed his dirty sweats and smelled terrible. Maybe she couldn't get a work visa or something. He got caught cheating in a raffle. He made his girlfriend enter multiple times under different versions of her name.

One company in about 2003 or so I worked for had an interesting interview process. All they did was send me an IP address and SSH credentials. Once I ssh'd into their DMZ'd Linux box in a chroot jail, there was a README file in ~/ that had more instructions. It ended with the line "the kill timer started when you logged in" or something like that. It wasn't super difficult stuff, but a noob would have been lost.
