Comment Science Fiction Becoming Science Fact (Score 4, Interesting) 32

Imagine a world where DNA sequencing can be performed on a mobile device in microseconds. You could "lock on" to the DNA in question and follow it through the air creating "trail" to follow. You could then combine all of those trackers, aggregating the pathways of millions of people identifying their travel history, interests, genetic makeup, pets and animals and kindly remind them that the t-shirt they glanced at 2 days ago is available to buy...again I suppose since you already purchased it.

While this is great science if it can be duplicated, this is going to get abused heavily from overzealous police forces looking to "solve" the crime with the right color suspect that happens to be walking by on a windy day with the crime scene window open to "give the forensic analysts some air" to advertisers who want to sell their cattle to the next giant corporation. Why can't we just have nice things. Sigh.

I've always thought our obsession with holograms utilizing 2D images is in the wrong place. If a 4th dimensional object casts a 3D shadow, why not look at ways to use light to cast the shadow instead of trying to use a 2D shadow to guesstimate the 3D shape. Reminds me of all the children's books/stories about being afraid if the shadow monster only to turn in the lights and see a coat rack.

That's not a reliable way to measure as it's unlikely a straight offset read/write is all that's happening. There could be checksums, verifications, and all other sorts of things going on. Unless you're connecting an oscilloscope to the data lines or writing your own benchmarks that run on the device's bare metal, you've only verified that the built in copy functions are the same regardless of disk used.

I suppose I'm a scalper then as I've been fortunate enough to get four of them with only one of them being sold on eBay for slightly more than I paid as none of my family members wanted the digital one and it didn't seem fair to sell it for $700 to those who can afford to flash, so it went to a guy who had almost gave up looking. But now that I've taken care of my family, I'm not taking up slots others are still fighting for. I will say that all four consoles came from four different retailers. Walmart, Best Buy, PlayStation Direct, and Amazon. Gamestop can go to hell with the damn bundles with useless gift cards. I don't think there are as many bots as people assume though. It's that later one that could only work on the new M1.

The real issue here is if taking away revenue sharing hurts the consumers and I don't think it does. If Google were removing the ability to use the search apps or engines from phones in the wild, then I think this would be an open and shut case, but taking away money from a contract violation doesn't really hurt anyone except the manufacturer. To note, Apple is the only manufacturer that did switch the default engines after the devices were sold and most of the consumers yelled bloody hell for that move so they reverted. It also wasn't very efficient at the consumer scale so they dumped it and only sale it for commercial purposes where the giant units have a crap ton more heat to get rid of.

The irony with this statement along with others like it is some imaginary idea that black men are out there in droves intentionally leaving their families behind. This isn't the case at all. Does it happen, absolutely, but when black men are arrested in droves and hit with felonies and prison time, forcing the mother's to seek welfare, then unable to find work because of those minor infraction felonies resulting in recidivism, for multiple generations, you get this shit. You want this to change, then change the laws that were created by your great grandfathers precisely to get this outcome, or at the very least stop electing judges that apply harsher terms to blacks than whites for the exact same crime. Black teens are convicted at much higher rates as adults than whites, ruining opportunity before it can begin. Stop hiring people that look like you (not just physically) and passing over everyone else when you're not going out of your way to expand your circle of people to be more diverse.

People that don't have to deal with this type of stuff always point to the "it's the families," or "this doesn't happen to immigrants," or "racism doesn't exist because I have one black/brown friend," and never stop to ask why those points are almost always debunked when we look at the data and even adjust to account for these things we still see the same trends. Even the post about Indians not experiencing what blacks go through is pure BS. I've watched countless times white executives get off a call and the first comment out of their mouths is "I couldn't understand a thing they were saying and they should speak better English." Or one of my favorites "they should just stay in their own country." Yeah, the country (ies) with more top intellectuals than your entire population. And boy, don't let them grow a beard or worse be Muslim then you're in a whole new world of blatant racism. And yes, they do talk about this kind of stuff, just not to you as they know you'll just fire them and get another H1 to replace them.

It's people like the OP that attempt to take every attempt by others to level the playing field as a challenge to their superiority and doing so is racist because you're excluding them.
