Comment Why the focus on taxes as a means to pay for UBI? (Score 1) 354

I see a lot of people posting that the rich will subsidise this via increased tiers of taxes. We've seen how well that works. We need the government to be able to fund this without tampering with (although fixing the tax system would be nice) taxes. And without printing more money. It needs to increase wealth.

So, get the government focused in on automation. If they have an automated farm growing lettuce, then take the profits from that, (after budgeting for repairs etc), split part off to fund the next automation project, and split the leftovers up amongst the population. It could be building cars. It could be cell phone towers. It could be dogwalking drones. It could be cheap ubiquitous wifi. It could be mortar style delivery launchers.

Would these compete with normal businesses? Of course they would. But the other businesses could have invested in the same style of automation.

Too many people say that government isn't supposed to make money. Why not? We certainly spend enough money on useless projects, why not do so on things that are going to make life better?

I'm seeing a lot of comments going both ways on here, with outrage showing up both for and against RMS.

However, I'd love to know how many (if any) women are speaking up to defend him.

As a member of a board of directors, he's got influence, even if he's not the head of the organization. Bringing him back onto the board sends the message that his behaviour is acceptable, and will be part of guiding the direction of the board going forward.

I know that I'd not be comfortable with my daughters working for the FSF with him in a position of power.
How many female engineers, office staff, lawyers etc. are also going to find other work to avoid being in that same position? How many that were already there are now feeling uncomfortable knowing who one of their bosses is?

This to me is the issue. Did he do great things in the past? Yes. Undoubtedly. Was he a sexist asshole in the past? It certainly looks like it. Has he shown any sign of NOT being a sexist asshole today? Not really. Any signs of being sorry about those his past actions have hurt? Again, not really. As others have noted - Aspergers =/= asshole.

While his principles on free software/hardware are still relevant and useful today, they come bundled with the rest of the bloatware that is RMS the person. And in today's society, that's why I think having him in a position of power in the FSF is a bad idea.

In 2008 Epstein was convicted of prostituting a child and spent time in jail for it. He was also banned from donating to MIT. Minsky must have been aware of this.

In 2011 Minksy organized another conference on Epstein's island. He did not distance himself from a registered sex offender who had admitted prostituting children.

2011 > 2008. That's why he should have thought otherwise.

The problem is when a filter fails to do what it is supposed to. If they are forced to ship a device that blocks porn, and someone who has the filter enabled is still exposed to porn as a result, what are the consequences?

If there are no consequences, then they could ship the world's worst porn filter, that only blocks goatse directly. everything else, they didn't know it was porn, so let it through.

If there are consequences, and something makes it past the filter, then there will be people that dislike apple or android actively seeking ways to bypass the filter and publish how to do so in order that those companies are smacked for violating the law.

If disabling the filter is too easy, then the people it's supposed to "protect" will bypass it anyways, and that opens things back up to more consequences.

Essentially, adults should get to pick and choose what they want to view, and have the right to decide what their kids do and don't watch, but if they don't want their kids to watch porn, maybe they should be paying more attention to their kids, rather than letting devices act as babysitter and guardian of their moral beliefs.

Actually, have you looked at your dryer and electric stove? We already have multi phase 220V to the house in North America. Your breaker box splits that into 110V for the rest of your toys to use, but your big draw appliances use 220V. Heck, I've got a garage heater that is also 220, which would make putting a high cap charger in there trivial for me.

I treat fallout 76 as a single player game with really crappy NPC AI. I even have a nemesis. The very first PC that I encountered had the immersion breaking name of "TheMuffinMan2176".
