An anonymous reader writes: Many of us knew his this man by his thrilling tales from such novels as "The Hunt for Red October", "Net Force" and many more before his modern claim to fame through his video game series. Now at the age of 66 Tom Clancy has passed away.

sciencehabit writes: Researchers have discovered a surprisingly effective way to “reprogram” mature mouse cells into an embryolike state, able to become any of the body’s cell types. Their recipe: Let the transformation happen in a living animal instead of a petri dish. The finding could help scientists better understand how reprogramming works and it may one day help breed replacement tissues or organs in the lab—or in living patients.

Deathspawner writes: Valve has today announced its next attempt at a console-killer with “Family Sharing”, a feature that will allow you to share your Steam library with family, and close friends. This almost seems too good to be true, and while there are caveats, this is going to be huge, and Valve knows it. As Techgage notes, with it you can share nearly your entire Steam library with family or friends, allowing them to earn their own achievements, and have their own saved games. Given the mammoth collection of games available on Steam, the fact that this feature is becoming a reality is almost as interesting as the feature itself.

jones_supa writes: The sudden death of a solid-state drive in Linus Torvalds' main workstation has led to the work on the 3.12 Linux Kernel to be temporarily suspended. Torvalds has not been able to recover anything from the drive. Subsystem maintainers who have outstanding pull requests may need to re-submit their requests in the coming days. If the SSD isn't recoverable he will finish out the Linux 3.12 merge window from a laptop.

He hopes to help revive quality Japanese made video games on the current generation of hardware and gamers after having a successful Kick Starter.

tocs writes: Nobel Prize-winning physicist Frank Wilczek wants to a build a perpetual motion machine . The concept uses Time Crystals, the idea that crystals can be extended into the fourth dimension, built of calcium ions to demonstrate the concept. If successful it might not lead to boundless energy but we could end up with machines that outlive the universe.

An anonymous reader writes: Back in February 2010 NASA launched the Solar Dynamics Observatory–a 3-axis stabilized satellite and fully redundant spacecraft. The aim of the SDO is to monitor solar activity and see how that impacts space weather.

As part of its observations, the SDO captures an image of the Sun every 12 seconds using the onboard Atmospheric Imaging Assembly, but varies those shots across 10 different wavelengths. NASA has now collected 3 year’s worth of image data from the SDO and has put together a video letting us see the Sun spin in all its glory.
