Now our ACs are worse than ever, requiring ever-larger compressors, evaporators, etc. Then when that drum's skin broke from the constant beating, they had to trot out a new fear target.. CO2.

I will vote for anyone who stands up to Europe on this front. I will vote for anyone who reverses the EV mandates. In short, I wish someone would bitch-slap Brussels with a dose of cold reality. Once lost, confidence is very hard to regain. Take Pan American World Airways, for instance. One of the nails in Pan Am's coffin was people started associating Pan Am and "bomb" and "palestinians" and then Lockerbie happened, and .. *poof*. Gone. So to a lot of you this seems appalling, that an employer would dare suggest this to its employees - but some of us have been using this as a survival mechanism for decades.

The parallels are scary. What killed Douglas, what put them in the position they did where they merged with Boeing with Boeing's money -- was bad airplanes. Or certainly comparatively so.

And now, for those very same reasons, it's happening again.

Only this is aviation, and there's no rubes in aviation. Or at least, there were rare.. and usually ended up destroying the airline. Eastern, Pan Am, TWA, US Air, all victims of Bad Management.

Point is -- the airlines will start looking at Boeing with suspicious eyes. It's probably too late at this point. They'll go to Airbus. They have no choice -- Lockheed got out of the passenger business a long time ago, and it's a shame too -- Lockheed makes good airplanes. They should buy Boeing.

Before Airbus does.

Don't get me started. I don't know what causes this Soviet / Russian ... "Russian-ness" but they've made it a centuries-long tradition of bad worksmanship and materials.

My thought is that it's the same problem that plagues capitalism -- greed. How? Essentially the same way. Those who issue the orders have incentive to keep things cheap. Those who actually make them don't care, likely because they've got no money, no future, no food, even. How can you turn out a fine part on a lathe if you're constantly worried about other things?

Greed, folks. Envy. Jealousy. That which drives those in power, and a fair number of peasants, too. Keep up with the Joneses. The sooner people get over that, well, maybe there'll be hope.

Oh, and for the record -- the one Soviet thing that was made right was the AK47.. and it's really an M1 Garand flipped over. The trigger group's damn near identical. If you're gonna steal, steal from the best, right? (Garand kinda stole that trigger group from Browning, anyway..)

For those who don't know, before the Japanese Invasion of the 1960's. Harley was King of the Hill, and had two domestic competitors -- Indian, and Cushman. Harley bought both and slaughtered them wholesale. Then came the japs and both the Brits and the Americans shat their drawers, because that little Honda ran so much better that America.. and the world.. bought them hand over fist. Then Harley has the BALLS to go to the Government and ask for a tarrif on Jap bikes to protect them from Big Bad Honda.

Boeing is so fucking stupid and myopic. I know I absolutely rag on them for being the son of Douglas, but -- when Boeing bought Douglas, one of the things they got was the MD-95. You've probably flown on it as the Boeing 717. It's really the last evolution of the old DC9. Point is.. this plane was born for the small field life. No support needed, no facilities needed, had its own airstair in the back, APU for power and cooling on the ground.. it had it all. And stupid Boeing killed it because it threatened the 737. DC9 was a much smaller plane, it was 2-aile-3, about a foot or a foot and a half narrower than any Boeing single-aisle jet. It was literally made for the small field market.

Fast foward to now, and Boeing did the shit it did to Bombardier, trying to muscle into that market.

I know I ridicule Douglas, and the DC10 -- but the DC9 had more life in it and is a much better ride for the passenger than any bizjet-turned-commuter, which is all the Bombardiers and CRJs and Fokker 100s and the like are.

DC9 was a beautiful, if flawed gem. Yes, flawed. Electrical problems were a thing. It would've served brilliantly for another 40, 50, 60 years with fatter turbofans. It would've filled that gap Boeing has for small-field ops and it would've not threatened the 737 in any way. Anyway so what if it did? YOU MAKE BOTH OF "EM! Stupid fucks.

But (and christoban this isn't addressed to you,but to those whining about how this is a capitalist problem) capitalists built the Saturn V's F1 engines *by hand*, most of Saturn *by hand*, the RS25s for the Shuttle *by hand*.. etc etc. And I consider those to be the scratch-built apexes of hands-on fabrication. And it was done by what some of you consider "filthy capitalists." The reason F1 and RS25 worked so well is because they people who made them knew what the stakes were. We're going to the moon, and we're building this space plane thing.. we gotta make it work!

Today it's different. Today it's "How much more can we squeeze out of every facet of this project so we can get bigger bonuses." That's not a Capitalist thing. That's a human thing. Greed is human, and the Communists were epic at it too. The problem isn't really "my -ism can beat your -ism" The problem is not caring about your product -- and that attitude filters from the top from the CEO down to the workers on the shop floor. The bosses don't give a fuck about the product because to do so reduces profit, and the worker that makes it doesn't give a fuck because as far as he knows, he could be replaced in 10 seconds with someone else, and his sense of craftsmanship was beaten out of him long ago by management and union alike.
